We can now call them Mexicans...

It seems that Hispanics would rather be referred to by their country of origin.

The real question is whether the media will accept that, which is why I have found it makes no sense to pay attention to the politically correcting media. They like to control through control of words.

Read Aldous Huxley's essays and you'll see what I mean. 1984 is all about that.

I'm happy to call them whatever they wish.

No strain on my part.

As one of "them", I can tell you this is not news. The only people I've ever known who called us hispanics were non-hispanics. Speaking generically, I'll use the term Latino, but rarely hispanic unless I'm pretty sure whoever I'm speaking to doesn't understand what Latino means.

My son-in-law is of Mexican origin. He's such an a$$ that he changes his nationality to suit which ever debate he's in at the moment.

Me? I'm a mutt. Sotts-Irish, German, Jewish, Welsh, and recently found out there's African on mom's side, and Scotts-Irish and 1/16 Cherokee (the purest bloodline in me) on my dad's side. It's impossible for me to be racist, just look at my heritage...I oppress myself!!

Doesn't that study mean the opposite of the title of this thread? People around here often refer to people from Mexico or Central America as "Mexicans." It's probably more from carelessness than bigotry, but I'm sure it's offensive to people from Central America.

Who cares who it offends...I'm tired of everyone stepping on eggshells in this country because you may hurt someone's widdle feelwings.

You are what you are, no matter what you want to call yourself.

Rant over.

yup. As long as it's not some epithet, I don't see the fuss.

I'm tired of people expressing their pride in needlessly offending other people. To refer to people from El Salvador as "Mexicans" is disrespectful to both nationalities. Is it really so difficult to try to be accurate?

I didn't make the rules on how to be Politically Correct...I believe that came from the left side of the spectrum.

When I'm interacting with someone with an accent, I usually ask where they are from... German, Icelandic, French, Mexican, etc... I don't think I've ever called someone a Mexican or a German... "Hey You" seems to work often enough...

Me too. I am always interested in other places and people from other places. I don't think most people mind being asked where they are from.

Occasionally i will get a non answer from someone with a thick accent that they are from Indianapolis so when that happens i move on to a different subject.

I don't know where the rules of political correctness started, but these days they are employed by the right at least as often as they are by the left. Fox News is a steady stream of right-wing PC'ness. My favorite example comes from the early post-9/11 era. Their news people refused to use the term "suicide bomber," preferring instead to use the less-informative "homicide bomber." It seems that "suicide bomber" shows an insufficient degree of hostility for the killer. Pretty laughable when you think about it.
