It suggest an alternate explanation with the reference to a second wreck on the site.

Well at least all but one got out alive. Their deaths woukld have accomplished nothing. The death rate in the submarine service was so high by then in the german navy . One would not really normally expect to survive.

Leave it to a German Engineer to design a toilet that flushes directly to the outside on a Submarine!

Nobody else would even think they coud attempt such a thing!

It is very bizarre. Why wouldn't they use a holding tank that could be pumped out when surfaced?

They might have been trying to save space/volume of a holding tank for other equipment.

There are lots of thru-hulls on subs. Trash ejectors for example...
