I need to buy/make/get a power pusher

I have too many cars and need to piush a lot of heavy things around. I am now at the age where I get tired out pushing carts with engines on them all day long.

I'd rather save my energy for repairs and other things.

I need a power pusher.

Yesterday I looked at a fork lift that was the walk-behind type: would lift a 2200 lbs load 8 feet in the air. I thought about adding a container at the top and using it like a portable scaffolding for my building, to install conduit and insulation on the ceiling.. The problem: you had to push it by hand everywhere, it had no power capability.

I have heard you can build a power pusher using a large starter and the right gearing.

That seems very unlikely, but I'm game.

I have also looked at buying a golf cart and cutting it down, just using the batteries, controls and the driving axle.

Anyone got any ideas?

I did find a nice power pusher for 6,000, which is why I'm looking for something else. I'm game for modifying or building. Just need the ideas.

I don't want my obit to read: " found dead behind the cars he was pushing out of the way to get access to a garbage can."

Do you mean these sorts of things?

Pallet Trucks : LIFT-RITE Powered Pallet Truck - Pallet Jack : Avenue Industrial Supply

Pallet trucks come in all shapes and sizes they even fit on the back of trucks but they all seem to rely on the heavy stuff already being on pallets.

I haven't looked at the prices for this sort of thing recently but 20 years ago you could buy a second hand fork lift truck (gas powered thing) for less then a pallet truck.

I think your solution will depend a bit more on the surface over which you need to move / haul this stuff. Strong smooth concrete is best but isn't always everywhere. Small wheels can not always manage with uneven surfaces.

Thanks for the info. The picture in the thread below shows what I'm looking for but a pallet jack, if priced low enough, would also work.. I don't consider 5,000 low enough.

Home craftsman have been using starter motors to power vehicles almost since cars had electrical starters. I remember reading articles in the late 50s and early 60s about using the,. They are stout, but best used intermittently.

Yep 5000 is a bit too much for most individuals I guess.

The picture you posted looks interesting but wouldn't the wheels just spin or is it way heavier than it looks?

It looks like it might use the weight of the vehicle being pulled to provide downforce/traction.

Oh right so it is a puller not a pusher?

If you are looking for something just to move a dead vehicle, a good sized snowblower would do it. You can attach a chain and pull, or throw a moving pad on the front and push.

Here is an example of my solution.

Can push, pull and lift things, and it can dig and spread and carry.
Also, when you run out of things-that-you-bought-it-to-do, you can invent a whole new batch of jobs that can absorb all that 'extra' time you have...

I cut a hole in the bucket for a hitch ball too, makes moving trailers quite easy.

How about a riding lawnmower? They're cheap and usually geared pretty low. Throw on a utility trailer, weld on a hitch for a tow dolly, etc. I think you'd be good with that IMO.

Maneuverability sucks. Too big to get into tight spots, too small to push something heavy unless it's on a smooth surface. Can't carry the tongue weight of anything bigger than a rowboat. Gearbox not at all designed for the extra load.

The list goes on. You can f0ck up a bunch of stuff trying to use one for those tasks though...

As much as I dislike the expression, it fits too well... Been there, Done that.
