That's cool! A looks like a more fun way to do leaf removal, too.

My uncle had one of these Scat Hovercrafts (file photo, his lawn was never that clean ). Not a whole lot had changed in 40 years, except maybe the ability to vaporize small critters sucked into the intake. It was fun but definitely fell into the category of "Does many things. Does none of them well." Sure, you could go over any surface. Sure, you could go straight quite quickly. But turning was often an exercise in futility. If you didn't lean at all, the outer lip would catch. If all went well, you simply lost directional control and skidded sideways while sort of resembling a turn without actually turning. If you leaned too much, it would lift the skirt on the outer edge, releasing the cushion of air bringing progress to a "screeching" halt. Knowing these quirks made for a lot of fun in an open field or out on the lake. Going through the woods or having a destination in mind made for an interesting exercise.

I use to see advertisements on the back of comic books for those things.

In 1956 (?) a lady I knew saw a UFO. It was on a state highway north of Matador, Texas, and flew only a few feet above the ground. She had to stop her car as the UFO rose up over a fence, crossed the highway, rose over another fence and continued on its' way. One other person in the car, a child, saw the same thing and the child described a high pitch noise with a 'windy' sound.

The Air Force investigated under the Project Blue Book and finally told her she must have been seeing things. What she described did not exist and could not exist. She described it in detail and a sketch artist drew it out and it was included in the report.

Years later she found a copy of the report and when you looked at the sketch you could easily see the UFO was a Saunders Roe N1 Hovercraft. As far as the history books are concerned the SN.N1 did not fly until 1959, but it seems they were being tested by the US a few years earlier.

I might just prod around the Blue Book files if I can find them. If I come up with anything I will post it here.

Well, my memory was off by just a little. The incident I was talking about was in 1951.

Check out the report at Blue Book Archive. In the search box put in MAXW-PBB9-1452. Be ready to spend some time reading because the report is 1452 pages long. At one time the entire report was Classified but it no longer is.

The story she told me is summed up at MAXW-PBB9-70, which is page 70 of the report. I could not find the drawing but I am sure it is in there somewhere. The report she showed me was no larger than a Blue Book, and if you have been to College you know what those are.

It is amazing how much data this report contains considering the fact that someone in the Pentagon must have known what this UFO was.
