I find that story lacking in some critical details such as:

Who bribed whom? When? For what purpose? What evidence exists to support the allegations?

Bribery in Mexico. I'm shocked, SHOCKED to hear of this.

The sad thing is the Dumberican anti-bribery law that isn't flexible enough to take local conditions into account (i.e. doing business in some places is impossible without payment of baksheesh). I feel more sorry for the executives that might be thrown under the bus, and hope that they find a non-extradition country to take them. Typical stupid government meddling.

Same. That article had no details whatsoever. It'll be interesting to see how it unfolkds

The laws against this have been around for at least 40 years that I know of.

There is an exception to the law, though: If you are at a border crossing and 'fees' are required, like a bottle of Glenlivet, then you are allowed to make such a 'gift' to the border guards.

This is not really seen as a bribe under the law because the guards have no power to OK a business deal.

But the laws might have changed on this, so don't take my word for it.

Some of our folks that traveled in Africa would usually pack a few bottles before they left the states. And if they did not have to use them to cross a border.......well.........

No one ever came home with a full one.

And are just as f**king rock-dumb and culturally ignorant as they were when they were written in 1977. Do the morons in Washington really think that Chinese, Russian, or Brasilan companies are tied down by the same noose?

*sigh*: I can't believe that I'm defending Mall*Wart here, but so it goes.

I read the article in the Times yesterday, it was fairly well documented with emails, quotes and sources.

And here it is news fans....and for the record, this type of thing is not that uncommon in this country especially in Jerkwater AKA Hazard County. A brief case full of cash buys a lot of influence. Here's $50,000 now can we talk?
