how many people like their boss?

"Liking" Something on Facebook Not Protected by First Amendment - Yahoo! News

Quote:
Six people sued Sheriff B. J. Roberts in Hampton, Virginia after he fired them. They say they were fired for supporting his opponent in his bid to be reelected, which would be a violation of their First Amendment rights. One of the six fired, Daniel Ray Carter, "liked" the Facebook page of Roberts' opponent. Roberts claims they were either fired for poor performance, or because supporting his opponent "hindered the harmony and efficiency of the office."
I'm sure there's more to the story but on the surface it isn't right.

The only bosses I have ever disliked are the ones that go out of their way to prove they are the Boss. They were very insecure people who were afraid that the higher ups would find out they were unsuited for their jobs and fire them or demote them.

But they still had to come up with ways to show they were the boss. We finally had to point out to them that interference with our jobs was a Federal crime so they needed to think twice before they came into our area just to mess with us.

That would usually hold them for a month or two.

But in their defense they really could not help themselves. The only people we ever got as managers were the guys who were close to retirement or had lost a big lawsuit since our VP knew we were going to pay little attention to them anyway.

There was no Facebook then to let people know you did not like them. We just did it the old-fashoned way and told them right up front.

We used to tell them that unless we blew up the Gulf Coast or killed more than 100 people at a time the higher ups didn't care what any of us did, but they still had to come up with ways to show they were the boss. The LAST boss I ever had was like that. I started my own company after that kind of boss.

I like my boss. I work from home so I never actually see her, she pretty much lets me be very independent as long as I get the work done...sometimes I'll go several days without even talking to her. But in the end, I make sure I get the work done and then some so we're both happy, its a good relationship.

I haven't had many bosses in my life, and don't have one now. The ones I did have were mainly insecure in their positions and spent a lot of time looking for someone to blame while they played CYA. I can count the good ones on one hand. Anecdotal proof that the Peter Principle is true. YMMV

I did have one Boss I liked because they were quick to admit they were an Administrator and not a Director. They understood almost nothing of what we did but they considered it a prestige job to be running such a vital cog in such a large oil company.

Our job description said we had to be people not just capable of working with little supervision but capable of working with NO supervision, so they vowed to show up as little as possible and we told them they were always welcome.

The biggest difference with them was that instead of second guessing everything we did and telling us what a bunch of screw-ups we were they just admitted they couldn't understand much of what we did so they were in no position to gripe about us.

Most people don't have the Ego strength to operate like that.

I'm the boss. I let my guys work and try not to bother them. Yet I still keep an eye on the job for shortcuts and mistakes which happen.

When our group had a Manager that knew what they were doing in our very technical field we would welcome their input. We used to say you can't have too many eyes on the life and death stuff we worked with. One tiny mistake and there went $40,000,000 out the window.

The problem we had was almost no one could understand what it was we did but they were scared to let on that this was the case.

My last boss had an interesting philosophy which I greatly appreciated. He advised his team to continuously look at opportunities of interest. He believed that we wouldn't be truly happy unless we knew that we were in the best jobs we could be in. We didn't spend all day job hunting but it wasn't awkward when we took time off to investigate other jobs.

To my original point, why should anyone be fired because they support someone else's electoral ambitions? Can't 'like' mean I think the candidate would be good for the office even if the incumbent has my full support? By extension, can the sheriff fire a deputy who dares to run for sheriff?
