New (to me) Hazet Assistent

Check it out, put it back together after I got it out of the back of my friends G-Wagen.

(fresh from Germany as well, eagleco-94's G)

I had to adjust the chains a bit. The bottom and middle tray were too close and out of whack. This should probably work. The trays flop around a bit, I think they might be missing a bushing or something.

The poles are straight but one of the poles threads are buggared up a bit. I'll take a file to the threads and clean them up or something.

There are multiple layers of paint but I can see original paint beneath it all. The front casters are probably not original. The rear tires appear to be continentals, I can see some of the crosshatch on the inside of the tire.

There are some small dings and surface rust. The ebay.de ad mentioned it did not close properly. The lips look like they need to be straightened out a bit.

I wonder if I can find the rubber trim, some good wheels, and maybe a new liner for the top tray. I'll post over on TheSamba, a lot of Hazet guys hang out there too..

Works perfectly!

It's for sale, I'll let James get around to posting about it.

I don't know much about it other than its a 4 speed 280GE or whatever it's called.

I did some surfing on TheSamba and my tool caddy is apparently a pre '65 version. The "A" in Hazet is lower case which was used prior to '65.Awesome! I'm missing the lock rod, seat, and could use some better wheels and some other things. Not bad for 69 Euros!

Very cool, J! Since I know nothing about them, I take it the sections collapse down into the base for storage/transport?

The arms don't collapse so it's not really mobile. It also weighs 50lbs empty. It's a useful tool cart for the garage.

No, no it wouldn't. Rick is overpriced and does crappy work. He would probably strip the metal tags off, put a decal and clear over it.

I can get my 300GD up to 75 and it will hold until I get to a gradient. However I don't like to push it that hard so I stick to 60. This 280GE is heavier but has about 60 more horsepower so it will probably cruise around 70 or so no problem with less aggressive tires. The trade off of course will be piss poor fuel economy. My friends 280CE is thirsty enough as it is and it has the most powerful M110 varient (The M110 in the G-Class is detuned to allow it to run on low grade fuel)

Very thirsty

8-10 MPG is the standard these days with a few pulling 10-13 MPG if they're lucky.

the 280e in a car struggles to get low twenties on the highway with mid to low teens around town. the G wagen is heavier and much more boxy.

my 87 mitsubishi montero is very comparable body wise and probably weight too and with its little 2.6 liter four and an automatic gets mid teens highway and probably not much worse around town. it will just do 75 if pushed on the highway.

I imagine with half again the horsepower a 280G would do 85 or maybe 90 in a pinch but get the mileage described above.....probably not more than mid teens highway and then only if staying around 65. I bet if you go 75 you will get low teens.
