what looks like a Dodge Omni?

What car is this that looks like a Dodge Omni/Plymouth Horizon?

AFAIK the Omni/Horizon were only made as 5-door hatches, the door key hole was above the door handle rather than ahead and there was a channel the length of the body at door handle height containing a trim strip. This rally car can't be a Mopar but what the heck is it? Why would anything aspire to look like the Omni/Horizon?

I had one, back in the late 80's it did it's job which was to get the family from point A to point B.

Since this is at Chatsworth I am guessing this is some model of a Talbot.

It sure looks to have the Omni door handles.

Dang! It makes the Mopars look pretty

I remember driving a Hyundai Pony in Vancouver and thinking a Chevette was a step up.

I drove an 80's vintage Horizon from Santa Fe NM to AZ once for a friend. What a POS that car was. I was sure it wasn't going to make it, the thing felt like it was held together with baling wire, spit and fervent prayer.

Can consistent automotive bad taste be ingrained in people?

Back in my premarital San Francisco years, for quite a while I dated a nice girl who was a Croatian/American US citizen.

She drove I think, either a 1977 or 1978 Plymouth Horizon; I never told her what a piece of junk I thought it was, and though we went out in it together a few times. Mostly I coaxed her into my taking us out places in one of my Crown Victorias, my 1982, and later on my 1988 silver Vic that I had purchased at Holmes Tuttle Ford at the Tucson AZ. Automall that same year.

The one thing about her family (they were real nice folks) that I never understoood, was that they ALL always, like the moth went for the flame, went for loser cars like Plymouth Savoys, dreadful looking old Studebakers, Nash Rambler Classics, and Chevy Celebrities, awful stuff --- over and over.

~~

But she was very proud of her underdash flashlight holder that her father had invented.

He had opened and then discarded both top and bottom lids of a small frozen orange juice can, and then affixed it under the dashboard of the Horizon.

Pretty good idea actually!!!

I had an Omni for almost 2 years. 2.2 litre with a five speed. Surprisingly fun car to drive but it wasn't all that solid. A lady in an Acura SUV pulled out in front of me one day, I was doing maybe 35, semi two lane highway - her on a side street. I hit the brakes hard enough to hit the middle of her rear wheel with the left corner of my nose. My car was totaled and you could hardly see a mark on hers. The axle took most all of the impact, probably didn't do it any favors.

I got $2500 from her ins. and used part of that to buy my Bimmer. The Omni had about 185K, way high for those damn things, I'd have been lucky to get more than $600 for it. I'd done a lot to keep it going. Cheaper than replacing it. I'd like to drive one of those Shelby-Omni projects. I felt slightly vindicated for liking my Omni when I discovered that Shelby had dabbled with them.

!
Better than a Zastava aka Yugo. 1970s American junk was miles ahead of what was available in Yugoslavia at the time.

It looks like the 1976 passat/rabbit.

Except the passat was a well designed ultra reliable little car, easy to work on with a robust little engine.

Just for the record, there was a 3 door hatch version of the Omni.
