Not if you're south of the Mason-Dixon Line.

After we were married, my wife and I found out that we are 4th cousins. Both of our dads knew, but waited until AFTER we were married to tell us. We both thought that our families were just tied to each other through generations of deep friendship, little did either of us know of our familial relationship.

Not that it matters to either of us anyway, as we're both VERY happy with our decision to pester each other until we die, umm, err...I mean love each other until we die.

Anyhow...most states have laws allowing 1st cousins to marry, if certain criteria is met such as age and or sterilization. No laws barring it from 2nd cousin on out, in any state, that I know of.

I suspect that many of us are more closely related than we realize. If the number of your ancestors actually doubled every generation you go back, in about 40 or so generations, that number would be greater than the total of all people who have ever lived.

While I suspect that near albino me and a jet black indigenous African are quite a few generations separated, anyone with Irish or Scandinavian ancestry probably connects with me 20 or so generations back, give or take God knows how many. 25 generations back yields some 33 million ancestors (ain't Excel great?) and I doubt there were that many people in all of Scandinavia or the UK back then.

Didn't your ancestors have anything better to do at night??

Two of my great uncles (brothers) married two of their first cousins (sisters) back in the 19th century. Had a big double wedding. Of course, there were not that many people in the county in Indiana back then (St. Leon/Dover area). To my recollection, their kids were all fine (well as fine as my family gets anyway).

In the cattle biz, if it works out, it's called 'line breeding.'

If it doesn't, it's called 'in breeding.'
