Does anyone know anything about a Porsche 928?
Spill the beans please. I'd like to hear about the good, bad and ugly.

^^ that's what I have heard as well, but have no first hand experience. But parts cars seem to be plentiful, perhaps for that reason?

It was in Risky Business. I think theyre really cool cars but I always get confused with the way Porsche chooses to do things. Usually the S4's from the early 90's are a good bet, but good luck finding one that isn't an automatic.

Ridiculous parts prices. 32v v8 is a good engine though, uses Bosch cis-e injection like the m103 and other mbs and Volos and such so if you're used to that, that is good. I know some folks have twin turboed that engine and make ridiculous power.

I believe that you have the opportunity to buy a true super grand touring car for econobox prices. A good clean no excuses car that has no major needs would be the way to go.
No disagreement with any of the above comments. Porsches have never been on my buy list because of service cost, though I really admire the earlier 911s.

I looked into one of these last summer, and parts prices and serviceability made me stick to my 560. My indies told me that the timing belt in particular, a part which needs service regularly on that car, is an absolute nightmare.
Aesthetics wise, I wouldn't trade it for any other Porsche.

the only porsche experience.....
I had a girlfriend who became a wife that bought a 1973 911 Targa while we were dating. The thing would fly; however because of less than great compression on one cylinder would always fail the yearly emission tests; thus, she had to spend money at the shop showing an attempt was made to bring it back into compliance.
She spent money in having some body work and a repaint done and within a year a few bubble spots showed up. She traded it in toward some small Toyota after she had owned the Porsche for about 3+years. The Porsche club had its ups and downs --- met some wonderful people in the Louisville, KY area.

They used Merc automatics.
Did Mercedes manufacture the complete 928 automatic transmissions? - Rennlist Discussion Forums

Yep, they do seem to be risky business, and no kidding on the parts prices, plug wires cost $350 for a set! I'm familiar with the timing belt issue. I'm not sure if it's an engine out job but it's mighty tight in there. I believe that the earlier cars (16v motors) are non interference.
There are a lot more automatics then 5 speeds, but from talking to a few people that have owned them, it seems that they prefer the autos. A Euro 16v Series 2 would be nice, but I wouldn't say no to an S4 either.

I recall seeing a Top Gear episode where they bought Porsches for something like 1500 pounds or less. I think Jeremy had a 928. Results were about what you'd expect.
