Memorial Day Weekend!

It snuck right up on us, leaving us with no plans at all. What is everyone else doing? Who has a standing tradition? Who has already left town? Big project? Lazy weekend? Favorite BBQ recipe?

Let's get some ideas out there!

Maybe paddling around in the Potomac in a kayak, hitting some museums, and taking my youngest child out to dinner to celebrate her birthday.

I was caught a little off guard, too. I was thinking NEXT weekend was Memorial Day weekend.

We'd love to be paddling. If only there was water...

We might take a drive to go find some, but there's not a lot about. The lakes are filling, but they are no place for a canoe on Memorial Day Weekend. Was really hoping our local river would be flowing by now, but no luck. I suppose I could go to the river to shovel nice dry sand for the garden, but that's just not as much fun.

I'm dog/chicken/house sitting for some family, so I can't really go far, nothing overnight anyway. Garden work and BBQ are sounding more like the plan. With a bit of salon remodel thrown in to boot.

Staycation for us this year. We're headed to Ohio next weekend for my daughter's graduation.

Paul Anka, ZZ Top, Gretchen Wilson and 3 Doors Down....
Monday is early golf and afternoon beer and BBQ.
At least our pool is open and sparkly clear!!

Also planning a little mower repairs somewhere in the middle....

Projects.
If I estimated correctly, I got about 25 hours of tasks to do over the weekend. That might be closer to 40 hours of actual work.....

I will hoist an adult beverage in appreciation of those soldiers in US service who "gave that last full measure of devotion".

Taking my best friends girl friend to the coast. Sounds odd sure, but her and I were close friends before they got together, and we've both been talking about getting away on a trip. Then my friend canceled becasue he had another commitment, so I'm taking his "old lady" and heading to the coast.

We usually toast to my Grandfather. We used to do it on Veterans Day, now more so on Memorial Day. He served in WWII, from D-Day until his first Purple Heart, and then for another few weeks until his second. Somewhere along the way he qualified for a third, but turned it down saying he already had two of the damned things. He said later that had he known it would have meant more VA money he might have felt differently. He recovered pretty much fine and spent the rest of the war with a supply unit in/around Paris, often as a driver for VIP's and occaisionally drinking beer with Bob Hope (long story...).

We'll raise a glass to him and all the others.

And still try to get in some paddling.

Going shooting with a colleague first thing Saturday morning. After that. No idea. Mabye go look at some used cars. Or more likely clean out and paint our main closet...

I will go to the County Veteran's cemetary here and say hi to my best friend and "bro" CWO2 M.B.C., who passed away in 2008. Mike went to work in the rear seat of an AH1-G Huey Cobra gunship in 67-68. Nearly lost his arm in a VC mortar shelling of his hooch during Tet. That ended his Army flying.
