Have you thanked a military person today?

An acquaintance of mine writes a column and blog, and I appreciated her thoughts this memorial day. I don't have her permission to copy it here, but here is the link:

A friend of mine was one of the first to hit the beach on D-Day. He had nightmares about until the day he died at the age of 94.

I used to tell him that I was not impressed about the length of his service or that he retired a one-star General, but I was impressed that at the age of 80 he could still get into his uniform. In fact he was buried in his uniform, and it was the only funeral I have ever been to where the current and a former Governor showed up.

He had to admit that a lot of men had seen combat, but few could make the uniform claim. He never talked about his combat service except to his Priest, but he was proud to talk about his administrative ability and how some of the changes he had come up with were still used by the US Army today.

When someone would ask him about his service he would tell then that only the dead have seen the end of war.

You should be proud of him and glad he's back.

I trained a number of ARVN artillery officers in 1973. It was hard not to be their friends, they were very engaging. I'm sure that when Saigon fell, they got put into the "education" camps. No way to tell what happened to them since that time.

That's one of the most poignant things I've ever heard or read on that subject.

A couple of old VAS clips sum it up for me.
The last few minutes of most episodes tell the story.
Here's two that always get to me.

Burial at sea.
