vocabulary

Today one of my lunch buddies who is a registered Engineer and is generally a pretty smart guy stated that his grade school granddaughter got an award for having a vocabulary of 150,000 words.

i said no way. a well educated person might have 50,000 words.

Anybody know what is correct?

I suspect your estimation is more inline than your friend's.

I can see it now ~ When the child does some thing wrong, they get to go out the front & write every word they know on the board. Poor child would be there a week !!

What is "correct" is that there are 76,973 angels on the head of a pin.

"The Second Edition of the 20-volume Oxford English Dictionary contains full entries for 171,476 words in current use, and 47,156 words. To this may be added around 9,500 words included as subentries. Over half of these words are nouns, about a quarter adjectives, and about a seventh verbs; the rest is made up of exclamations, conjunctions, prepositions, suffixes, etc. And these figures don't take account of entries with senses for different word classes (such as noun and adjective)."

When I called him on it he went on to say that there was a junior high kid with a million word vocabulary and that the dictionary has 12 million words in it.

Now I am thinking he was just making it up to "win" the argument.

Disappointing.

Ah ha but 50,000 words in English - the translations of those words in French and then a distorted translation from the French to German might get you there!

Do you think a persons vocabulary is unimportant?

You don't indicate the kid's age or grade, but it's not an unreasonable number, especially for a child that reads above grade level. Research varies widely, I've seen estimates for entering first graders of anywhere between 3K and 25K word vocabularies. A lot depends on how those researchers defined "knowing a word". Most recent estimates are coming to consensus on about 2-3K words added to vocabulary from first through 8th grade, slowing gradually as time goes on. The majority of those words are learned incidentally, not taught in class obviously.
There are no accurate tests to determine how many words a person knows, only estimates at the very best. I'd suggest that whoever gave that kid the award was digging real deep looking for reasons to give awards.

Well a quick google came up with 476,000 English words in Webster's dictionary. Does this mean that your buddies trump card of a million words was someone who was multi-lingual?
