And a Right Wing talking point fades away....
 

With great sadness the Right Wing press is faced with the passing of one of it's favorite talking points/fables: No new oil refineries have been built in the US in twenty years.

Today Motiva announced the opening of its' refinery expansion in Port Arthur, Texas. Once a 275,000 bbl. a day facility it is now a 600,000 a day facility. All of the expansion is new and built from the ground up as a brand new refinery. I am no good at attaching links; maybe someone else can.

Work was started five years ago and has continued the entire time the Right Wing Press was telling us that no refinery construction was underway in the US. And even worse, Obama has made no effort to stop the construction of the refinery even though it has been widely reported that he is doing almost nothing but trying to stop such developments.

Another refinery is also about to double in size in the Northwest, and two refineries in Tulsa have just finished expanding. The Sunoco refineries that the Right Wing press have been speaking about closing were just purchased and will not only stay open but also plan to expand. I guess the Right Wing Press must have missed that story, so I am glad to be able to bring it to their attention.

Of course all this expansion will result in a lot of jobs paying around $32 an hour. I guess the new talking point will be just think of how many more Union jobs would have been created if Obama were not President.

Hummmm..... Might have to rethink that last one.

thank goodness refineries are expanding.... having grown up about 50 miles east of Port Arthur, back when there was CONSTANT expansion and growth of the petro chemical facilities from Houston to New Orleans, this is welcome news. Now, drill, baby, drill....

Hmm.... so you are saying that a closed down refinery that was souped up and reopened is a NEW refinery? Very interesting logic.

A closed refinery is one that has no employees, produces no oil, no gas. An open one is the opposite. For all intents, it's new. What part of this are you having trouble with? It doesn't count unless it's got previously non-existent infrastructure and opened under some other president, right? Your opposition to what the President has done would be easier to understand if you would EVER give credit where credit is due. The fact that you don't makes your entire position irrational.

OH! You mean his highness B.O. built the refinery? OH! That's different. He probably went out there and sweated with a welding lead in his hand and did it all by himself. You know, like how HE killed Bin Laden?

Sort of new this whole 'refinery expansion thing' are you?

The refinery never missed a day of production except for when a Hurricane blew through and then it was not down, it was shut-in. I have worked a few of these storms and know that the only way a refinery is shut down is when a boiler is flooded.

And shut-in does not mean production stops. It just means that nothing is delivered or received. Normal operations resume as soon as a storm has passed and an inspection is finished. This is usually a matter of hours.

If anyone wants to know more about this then they can Google it. The oil companies are quite proud of their expansion efforts and are making no attempt to hide their accomplishments.

Well they DO want to keep plugging on how obama opposes the keystone pipeline-- That would
" Greatly increase the countrys energy independence"
but they will never tell whats really the goal of the keystone-- its oil is likely as not not going to one of the tree refineries on the texas coast --and it likely wont provide a single gallon of cheap fuel for anyone in the US. ITS destination--- the oklahoma to Port Arthur leg is being worked on now--- Port Arthur Tx is a DUTY FREE TRADE ZONE where the oil companys can export all of any oil they wish to the highest paying market--and get out of tarrafs.

If you want to see what a closed refinery looks like then google 'Hudson Refinery Cushing Oklahoma' and look for a site called 'abandoned Oklahoma'.

The refinery is now gone since it was declared a Super-Fund site and was totally wiped away.

The story told by the locals is that the owner ran the place into the ground and then one day walked into the Bank and closed all the accounts. After they took off with all the cash they just left the place to fall in. They didn't even bother to tell the employees they were closing the place. I don't know if that is all true or not, but I do know this is......

The taxpayers with the bill for the clean-up. I don't know what it cost to tear down a refinery, but we got to pay for it since the owner could not be found.

Much of the steel in the plant was radioactive, so we got to pay for disposing of that, and the toxic chemicals left behind caused the area to evacuated for a few miles in every direction while they were cleaned up. We got to pay for that, too.

Yup.... The free market at work!

Today the land is fenced off with big DO NOT ENTER signs. If you want to see it on Google Earth then just look for the big empty place on both sides of the state highway on the west side of town.

They just closed a refinery in Marcus Hook, PA. Instead of tearing it down and disposing of it, they're just leaving it there until someone else foots the bill. That area already has something like twice the cancer rates of the rest of the surrounding areas :(
