Gay child expelled after being bullied and taking tazer to school

In case anyone thinks crazy schyte is limited to the coasts a young, openly gay man who is in High school here in the Hoosier state found himself being bullied.

His single mom bought him a tazer to defend himself. It was found by school officials and he was promptly expelled.

Now there is a spirited discussion going on in the local media about whether his mom or the school officials are acting correctly.

Having been bullied myself when I was young (I am not a shrimp now but was in jr hi. I was small, nerdy and different) and my son was bullied in grade school, I tend to side with the mom.

It's a shame that it gets to that point. As a parent, I can see equipping my kids to protect themselves against bullies if the need arose. I can certainly understand where she's coming from while not completely agreeing with her decision.

Being one of the bigger kids in the school, I was on the other end. I was pretty quiet and my parents raised me to respect others. Every now and then a kid would test me, perhaps in an attempt to gain playground cred. It takes quite a bit to get me wound up and you can only get pushed so far before reacting. I don't ever remember anyone trying twice.

I would side with the mom in this case. There is no excuse for treating someone like i'm sure this kid was being treated. That being said did he or his mom go thru the proper channels of reporting the bullying?

There have been a couple instances over the past few weeks at son #1's & daughter's school (7&8 grade) where the bullied had reached their threshold and fought back at the bullies. The unfortunate thing is they are treated the same by the administration when punishment is handed out.

He should have pointed it at them.

Unfortunately some schools have non existent anti bullying policies.

when my son was bullied the school seemed impotent to do anything. After leaving school grounds of course they have no authority.

My dad taught me that if someone is larger and bullying I was to use any equalizer handy to defend myself, a stick or whatever. I told my son the same thing. My wife the teacher did not agree but did not interfere. I told him if he fought back and made the bully pay for it by hurting him the bullying would stop. Often just standing up to them will make it stop.

As it turns out in his case and in mine when we confronted the bully and fought back, later the bully became a friend.

I think a tazer used appropriately only in self defense is acceptable.

As a school it is a tough call though especially with current litiginous climate.

I think the mom's actions were wrong. Arming a child?? Remember Columbine??

Her child needed to be armed differently...with a psychologist and martial arts training. The psychologist to help with the inner demons the kid was being forced to battle while at school, and martial arts to help with self control.

Kids are going to pick on each other...it's nature.

Nah, martial arts to teach the kid to kick the crap out of his bullies without a tazer. Maybe they wouldn't be so smug if their nickname is "pug-nose." Bullies understand one thing, and that's violence.

Recently met a retired teacher. I asked her why she left teaching; she replied that teachers today are more baby sitters than teachers. She said through the years, the policies changed to the point where she was no longer empowered to discipline out of control students. That's when she decided to retire.......

Not to permit the tazer is to give advantage to the natural weapons of the bully--muscle and size. It's probably better for the school to allow the students to organize their own Anti-Bullying Squad--a group of well-mannered strong older students authorized to intervene in a limited degree.

In the 4th grade, I transferred to a new school. A kid decided I was fair game to establish himself in the hierarchy. I saw no choice but to fight. I had the better of him. On the way home from school that day his older brother and some friends beat the crap out of me. Not a big deal. The kid never came after me again. Damn chimp genes.
