Another US Solar Company Goes Under
Konarka Technologies Inc. filed to liquidate on June 1
Konarka attracted $170 million in private capital and $20 million in government research grants. Howard Berke, chief executive officer of the company, said June 1 Konarka had been unable to obtain financing and was unable to continue operations. The company, which said it would lay off its 85 workers, listed $100,000 to $500,000 in assets and $10 million to $50 million in debt in its Chapter 7 filing yesterday in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Worcester, Massachusetts. At least four other U.S. solar-panel manufacturers filed for bankruptcy in the past year as the price of the products fell 50 percent on an oversupply and expanded production in China. |

Basically, the Chinese subsidize their solar production and allow it to be dumped on the Western market, yet the Western conservidiots squeal whenever we try to do the same to protect our companies. Idiotic.

Maybe if the subsidy was 2 or 3 billion, the company wouldn't have gone under.

I am of the opinion that if there was money to be made in it the power companies would be pushing solar to help out with the load on the home. I guess when it gets to the point that it would be more cost effective to install home solar in every house than it cost to build a nuclear power plant (SO is finding out right now) you will see more home solar. If someone could come up with a solar powered 3 ton capacity house a/c unit they could retire early.

Solar companies going belly up is not confined to your side of the pond.
I have heard solar called the next dot com bubble burst. A local municipality near here promotes solar yet it does not have one solar electricity generator of its own. It has suitable building roof space yet no interest. Just another case of our regulators telling us "Do as I say, not as I do" !!

Higher than nuke/fossil, but will go down as an economy of scale develops. In short, relevant only to shortsighted morons. Besides, taking care of Gaia is worth a higher price.
