RAM limits with Win XP Pro
 

I heard Win XP Pro can use up to 3GB, maybe 3.2GB, of RAM. Up to 4GB can be used with some BIOS modification. Is it a complicated modification to increase from 3GB to 4GB? I know how to add or swap RAM IMMs.

Buy a MAC? :eek::D The Mac I use daily, is almost as old as some of the younger members here. :D

XP Pro at work. 2 GB RAM is what is addressable on our networked POS Winders crap. I mean, Windows XP Pro. I hope to switch to Winders 7 this week. I'm ready for some fresh compatibility hell.

I'm about to pull the trigger on a new MacBook Pro for my kid bound for France.

Generally, XP Pro can address 3 to 3.5 GB of RAM.

Believe it or not, some banks and embedded applications (NYC MTA ticket machines for one) are still running old-school Windows NT.

and I thought it was bad here at work with Windows XP! My computer has 1GB or ram , but the one next to me only has 480MB!! MY phone has more ram!

Switch to Win 7 If you like, but I can assure you that a machine with XP Pro and 3 gig of memory will get more work done than a WIN 7 with any amount of memory. The Win 7 machine may look a little faster at first glance but when you factor in all the reboots, crashes, lockups, etc, the XP machine will win the race.

Your results may vary. I have been running two laptops on Win7 non-stop for months without a crash. I understand that I am not alone.

XP Pro SP3 still exists in business primarily due to legacy networks in large organizations. For the same reason, most of those XP bases also use very old versions of IE.

I can say that BOTH XP SP3 and 7 are very stable if managed correctly. And both are great systems.

There's another reason why XP is common in business ... a lot of legacy software won't run in 7, and XP Compatibility Mode is more work for I.T. to set up than just using XP.

Really? What you describe here is the exact opposite of my experience, and that of every other person in IT I've ever spoken with. Windows 7 is one of the few times Microsoft has gotten it right. And, in most cases, Windows 7 runs better than XP on the same hardware.

It's all about how it's setup. My desktop only has 1.5gigs.

Its weird how experience differs. I had windows 7 since day one and it was never a problem as well as Vista. I always had trouble with hard ware.

Same here. My PC ran much much better in Win7 with 8 gigs of RAM rather than XP with 4 (3 usable). What a shocker!

Win7 is a decent OS, and frankly I had more issues running XP than I ever did with Win7 in regard to crashes and reboots since my hardware setup (specifically some drivers with the mobo) clashed with SP2. I've been on Win7 for 2-3 years now on multiple machines with absolutely no issues. I've now got 32gb RAM in a brand new machine, and I can't imagine running XP on anything except my netbook.
