Generic VDO guage

I have a VDO water temp guage in my formula ford. It does not seem to be working. I suspect the sending unit (its fairly cheap). Any chance I can go get one at autozone? Anybody have suggestions as to how to proceed if it looks like I am chasing my tail?

Thanks!

..I also have a 427 Cobra replica with an aluminum chassis.

E Gauges

Go to eGauges.com - VDO, Auto Meter, Defi, Isspro and Classic Instruments Gauges they are a VDO on line dealer and have a catalogue for you to check or go to VDO and check their on line catalogue for the part number.

Tom,

With temp and oil pressure guages I have always felt more confident with mechanical ones. It would be really easy to just buy a mechanical gauge in 2 3/8" or whatever size you have and slip it in place. One less thing to rely on the electrical system and more reliable IMHO.

Best of luck with it.

I believe I actually have one left over from my first car the 1960 Simca aronde which I bought at the NAPA in Greencastle around 1965. I suspect the weight of a full mechanical is significantly more than the plastic electrical guage though. I guess I will pull the old dear out and weigh her.

Yeah, I forgot we were talking about a race car and I expect that the mechanical is a little heavier. With race cars and aircraft weight becomes a much more important factor to consider. If you do decide to use the mechanical, make sure you remove the wiring that was in place for the electrical one.
