Tragic shooting in Wis

Very sad event, being treated as domestic terrorism by the FBI.

Sad indeed.

Congratulations to all OD participants who have resisted politicizing this tragic event.
Seriously. Mourn with those who mourn. There will be time for pandering, later, much later.

Very sad. Was the shooter so stupid as to mistake Sikh's for Muslims?

Based on my personal experiences with such people over the last 50 years.....

I have known a few right wing loons. Real John Birchers that even the most hard core Tea Party types would think were nuts.

I have also known a few NAZI's ranging from wanna-be's to the real WW2 version. They seem to live in a world of their own and even the Birchers would not have anything to do with them.

Some right wingers like to claim that the Left wing types are like the NAZI's, but that's only because they don't know what they are talking about. Some Left wingers think right wingers are like NAZI's, but they are wrong for the same reason.

It will be difficult for many people to wrap their heads around this episode because if this guy was a real NAZI, as it is claimed he is by several sources, then his reasoning for his actions would be so far removed from the frame of reference most of us have concerning reality that it is likely we will never understand what drove him to this.

One real NAZI once told me there was nothing like the feeling of power he would get when he put on his uniform, so maybe it was needing to have this 'feeling of power' is what drove the shooter?

Don't want to derail, but Birchers have very litte in common with Tea'ers. have discharged a few NAZIs from service. They were, as you say, real outliers.

I have read that shooter "may" have had tattoos that "could" id him as a white spupremicist, have you a link to more, ie the NAZI thing? Not challenging you, I'd just like to read it. Law enforcement often gets it wrong with tattoos.

A member of a racist skinhead punk band, Mr. Page, who was killed in a shootout with police, had also tried to make purchases from the National Alliance, a neo-Nazi organization, according to Heidi Beirich, director of the the Intelligence Program at the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

"We've been tracking him for more than a decade," says Ms. Beirich.

No tattoo info, but more background:

One set of observations

From the interview that is linked off the SPLC blog:

Quote:
What kind of topics do you write about in your lyrics?

The topics vary from sociological issues, religion, and how the value of human life has been degraded by being submissive to tyranny and hypocrisy that we are subjugated to.
Sounds perfectly reasonable, doesn't it? Guess this is one of those cases where context matters.

You'd think that a former PsyOps man would be better trained than to mistake Sikhs for Muslims. Of course, this could be a personal vendetta of some type set up to look like terrorism.

And we're off.

Our thoughts are with the victims.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims of such senseless behavior. The people were peacefully minding their own business and unfortunately were in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Being at a place of worship = "wrong place" Fascinating, but I don't think that the particular expression is appropriate for the topic.

well, it looks like he was def a hater. never understood those white power types. He most likely knew the difference between sikhs & muslims. He just hated folks with a darker skin color than his. He did have a less than honorable discharge from the Army, so it appears that they were on to him. PSYOP specialists (his busted rank was E4) are not particularly high speed low drag operators. There is some training at JFK SWCS but we are not looking at an SF or Ranger type here.

My condolences to the dead. Sikhs are wonderful family people and I am certain this horrible event is very discomforting for them individually and as a community.

I assumed Larry's comment was simply one of time and place, not that he intended to imply being in a place of worship was a wrong place....

I've a dear friend who is closely coupled with the Sikh community in Baltimore. As generalizations go, "gentle" and "giving" are two that can honestly be applied to the individuals in this community. This is heartbreaking, indeed.

UnDamBelievable!!!!!!!!!!

Reading something sinister into a peaceful post offering honor and empathy for the dead is about as despicable as anything I've ever seen on this forum.

That is not what I meant and you KNOW that is not what I meant!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As ramonajim correctly and gracefully points out, this is a heartbreaking event and you come up with something like this. Unbelievable!!!!!!!!!!!!!
