Adjustable Cheek Pad for Shotgun Stock Comb Height?
Has anyone tried any of the strap-on cheek pads for rifle and shotgun stocks, to raise the comb height?
The way I'm built, I need 15 1/2" length of pull, and an extra 1 1/2 to 2 inches of drop at the heel to get a gun to fit me properly - on most mass production stocks, the buttplate ends up being halfway above my shoulder if I throw the gun up for a wingshot. I've tried a Morgan adjustable buttplate, but it can only add about 3/4 to 1 inch of drop at the heel. My thinking is to add one of the removeable cheek pads to add in an extra 1/2 inch of drop, to get the stock to seat properly on my shoulder. Here's the one I'm looking at - And advice/opinion from the shooters out there? |
You're probably just better off having a nice Italian double made to fit. With interest rates so low right now, it hardly makes sense not to buy a custom fitted Italian shotgun. Plus, you get to travel to Italy to be fitted. Your wife will probably go along with the plan for that reason alone.

I've been around people who used them, but never liked them myself. I have always just taken lots of care and time and come up with a shotgun that fits me. I have a Winchester 101 Diamond Grade that it took me a long time to find.
When I shoulder it, you can look right down the bead and see the center of my pupil. My old side by side does not fit that well. My pupil is slightly high, but it works okay because the barrels triangulate on the target. |
I just shoot until something drops or the hammer clicks.

There are some awesome stock makers in Turkey as well... AAAAA grade walnut burl custom made stock... :D YOu might try a fabarm over and under. The competition grade one... They have ones with great burl and adjustable cheekplates...

Although I have to say Italy is probably more scenic.:D I have a Japanese made Browning that is pretty good, but not quite at that level. |

Meh, if I was going to spend up in the four figure range for a well made shotgun, I'd be more than a little hesitant to be taking it out in the woods and getting it beat up. Skeet or trap range, yes, but crawling over barb wires fences with it?
At that, I've already got quite a collection of long guns around the house. I'm just looking at rigging up a cheap knockabout field gun, that I can reliably hit something with and put some meat on the table, and won't really care if it gets a little banged up in the field. I've already got a cheap Stoeger Uplander 20 ga SXS - and when I say cheap, I'm only referring to the price - made in Brasil, suprisingly good fit and finish, nice solid gun, and the stock dimensions are already quite a bit closer to what I need than most of the other higher end guns in my collection. When I tried a Pachmayr slip-on recoil pad on this same gun, that kicked the length of pull up to around 15", my hit to miss ratio on Texas doves noticeably improved. I'm looking to do a few cheap and temporary tweaks to the gun, experiment and find the dimensions that work best, before say plopping down some real money on a custom stock for it or some of the higher end models in the collection. |
Get a Mossberg. Cheap, reliable and hits the target.

Well, I'm afraid I can't offer too much in the way of serious shotgun advice. I'm more of a rifleman myself, and only recently did we add a shotgun to the safe. A CZ Bobwhite 20g side by side. Seems nice, but we haven't even been able to go out and shoot it yet. It's her gun, as she's the one who wants to eat birds. Now I just need to buy some more choke tubes...

Yes, my 101 Diamond Grade is my skeet gun with a tube set. It was a good investment too. I bought it about 12 years ago for $1,050 and it's now worth $2,500 easy. My field guns are an Ithaca SKB side by side 12 gauge, 26" IC/MOD, selectable trigger & an Ithaca Featherlight 12 gauge. |
