Never say Well,...

Sometimes you just figure things out. I made an interesting discovery at this mature point in my life. I'd sometimes notice people getting either apologetic or defensive during conversations, and I'd wonder if it was something I said (duh!).

I thought about it for some time and realized it was when I led a sentence with "Well,.." and it seemed some people take that as a challenge to what they just said, or it makes some negative mental connotation. It's just a habitual filler word for me as I finish my thoughts, but it seems to have an unintended effect that I never contemplated before.

I active try not to say it, and there is a difference now in the flow of conversation. Just a Eureka moment I thought I'd pass along.

The OP claims when he starts a phrase with "well" in normal conversation people get defensive or apologetic. It has nothing to do with the CONTENT he is talking about. But of course, as The Swede says, how dare we post something non-political on this political forum.

As to the topic. I try to become more aware of how I phrase things, especially since my occupation depends upon it. I have made some changes but there is still a lot of room for improvement.

Ever notice how scientist type persons answer questions starting with "So"?

Hey, Dr. Bugby, what is the life-span of the Drosophila melanogaster?

"So the common fruit fly, Drosophila melanogaster....."

Makes me nuts.

That is very funny. And yes I was referring to normal conversations with people I work with and those close to me. In communicating, it's all about phrasing and punctuation.

As I get older, I stop and think before I speak. That has saved me a lot of grief.

I no longer have close relatives living here. Almost everyone -Out in the World here is an outspoken right wing spincher very much like one poster here in particular that wears their ideology on their sleeve--and like him , REALLY stink up the joint. They drive around town in their booge-wa fat ass escalades --still wearing Mcain/Palin stickers-the works. Im planning on escaping so i can once again be around normal people.

Now when you say Sphincer which one are you referring to? The human body has three or six of them you know.
