Got a 91 Toyota pickup with 345k miles on it in the shop
Lady owner wants a/c repaired. I've sold a front main seal/oil pump replacement job on the truck too. It leaks about a qt of oil a day just driving around town. Should be interesting to see how everything else looks in there at that mileage. There is a narrower seal from the dealer that you can install and offset it from where it has been riding for the past 345k miles. Truck starts up and runs good. Manual transmission is showing its age though. These are some tough little trucks.

There was a concrete contractor here who used to run them for his crew. He eventyally replaced them with Dodges with cummins I think.

I had an 81 and sold it with 500000 miles. Tough trucks indeed.

My 86 had 379k on the clock when I sold it and it' still on the road. My DD 93 has 230K, although it's 22RE has a new top end incl. head, valves etc.

The nice thing about the old 4cyl trucks, I was pricing reman. motors and I can get one with a 4yr. warranty, long block and installation for about 1800 bucks total when the time comes.

Oh yea, prices are dirt cheap for parts for them too.

Meh, I had a 124 300TE in the other day that had 470K. Not only was it a white one, but its paint was better than mine.

one of my customers has a toyota 4 runner with over 500k on it. Thats interesting to me as I seem to see a few of those for sale a lot with bad engines. Guess it goes to show if you take care of it they will last.

Can't you get a speedy sleeve for that balancer? If so, that will take care of the worn groove. My wife had a Four Runner which is basically a Toyota pickup chassis. It was probably the most trouble free 200,000 miles we've ever had on a vehicle. Once the kids grew up she wanted something smaller. If she still had it, it would probably still be running. |
I find it hard to determine when enough milage in our ownership has accumulated. There is a point of no longer being economically viable that does occur. Or reliability steadily declining. Still it is amazing how many miles some people accumulate on their vehicles.
At really high milages I have always been concerned about metal fatigue. Of course this far north in the rust belt means you also have to inspect the undercarriage periodically as well. Many, many cars go to their graves far too early up here in the rustbelt because of it. Reliable as hell still but becoming unsafe. |

They replace it with the 3.4 or 5VZ-FE, which is proving to be an excellent motor, arguably even better than the 22RE. I suspect the 500K 4 runners are 4 bangers or 3.4 v6's. The ones you see with blown motors are likely the 3.0's. |
