85 mph is nothing, I would routinely hit 90mph coming into or out of London on the M3 and M4 and it's a busy city. The problem here is how easy it is to get a driving license. As a co worker from Sweden once said, it's so easy, they may as well be sticking them in Cornflakes packets.

Rob Pruijt,

I also have driven a good bit on the Autobahn, although not as much as you. I have seen a few accidents and yes, when they have one it is a wing dinger due to the high speed, but they are not nearly as common of an occurrence due to training, road rules and discipline for those rules.

In Texas, the roads generally have much less traffic than the typical open section of the Autobahn.

The fact remains though, that per mile traveled, the Autobahn system is statistically the safest limited access highway system in the world.

In the early nineties there was a big campaign to make the Autobahn safer.

The new rules are;
-If you are in an accident and were driving over 80 mls/h you are responsible
-If you drive very fast towards an other vehicle, with blinking headlights an left indicator on (very common in that time) you lose your license or get arrested. I have seen guys in nice suits being dragged out of their BMW an cuffed).

After that it was better.

Still I don't like the Autobahn, the French and Spanish tollways are much nicer. Wider roads with perfect surface and nice service stations.

One of the problems with driving fast is that most people have no real driving experience. It is very easy to press the gas pedal, is is not so easy to make an emergency stop at 120mls/h going downhill (This I know from own experience). The people that had just passed me on the occasion lost their heads (literally) when they drove under a jackknifed trailer. This is something that is hard to forget. I was standing on a dark freeway with a decapitated family in the remains of their car and heard cars coming over the hill. After that I was not very enthusiastic about the Autobahn anymore.

If you want to drive really fast, go to the Nürburgring.

Quick question for the folks from Indiana...On the I-90 tollroad, is it true that if you get to your "off" before a certain amount of time, the "toll-trolls" hit you with a speeding ticket due to the fact that they've already timed out the fastest legal speed between the points and know if your time is less, you HAD to be speeding? I remember someone saying that, sometime back, but I've never seen it happen...

Any truth to that?

I just returned from Miami a couple of months ago and the speed limit through Texas was 80mph for the most part anyways. However, I drove my Supercharged Mustang GT a little faster than that...I crossed the state of New Mexico at night in just a few hours running 140-150 most of the way.

And then there is the beauty of Florida with all the toll roads. When you get home, you have all the "Toll By Plate" fees to pay...

Forget the USA highways. Do the Autobahn.

In Texas, the roads generally have much less traffic than the typical open section of the Autobahn.

And the drives pay attention, no drinking liquids, no yapping into handheld mobile phones, no tailgating, every lane change is sgnaled, takes a year to get a driving license, and costs $2,300 worth or Euros.

The fact remains though, that per mile traveled, the Autobahn system is statistically the safest limited access highway system in the world.

I drove the Autobahn in a 2012 Audi A6 for two weeks in June/July this year. Total impulse. Just went and DID it.

It was safe comfortable relaxing and as serene as taking a bubble bath.

And totally LEGAL.

The Autobahn surface is creamy smooth, banked correctly and even the stripes are 50 feet long, way longer than the US highway stripes.

Left lane is PASSING only. But I passed everthing in sight. All day.

I did not know until I got back to the USA when I checked the dual mph/kph speedometer how fast I went.

I drove 130-160 mph.

EVERY day.

Here was the blog, with pic's if you missed it..

It was the vacation of a lifetime.

Figured some day when I was laying in some bed with a hospital at 85 years with a testosterone habit, I'd have TWO choices.

!. "Woulda, coulda, shoulda"

2. "Jim B., remember THIS !!!!"

Made the right choice.

So should YOU.

I drove through East Texas yesterday where the speed limit is 75mph. On several occasions, I had to pass on the inside because there was someone sitting on the passing lane with the cruise control on at 65mph.

The problem isn't speed, it's lack of training.

That about the humidity is a fact.

I like the TTC except the use of eminent domain to steal the land, and the part about "Good-Hair" Perry, or any other gov't official / crony getting rich off of it*. Well, and I expect that the wild hogs are going to prove inconvenient.

* Get this TxDOT has a contract by which they have to reimburse the SHCC for any 'uncollectable' tolls. It's funny because there's no way for the State of Texas to collect tolls from anyone but Texas drivers.

Yeah, I think there ought to be an annual lottery where a small number of drivers are issued a single missile. They aren't allowed to post any indication of the missile though. Instructions are that it is to be used in cases such as yours. Let that happen a few times. Word will get out pretty quickly.

I prefer 100 dollar first offense and a 1000 dollar second offense fines enforced by sworn in retired military.

Nevermind, FIrE ZE MIsSiLES!

Left lane camping is illegal in lots of places. Unfortunately, I don't know of anywhere in the U.S. it's actively enforced.
