Cars that you thought would be great but weren't

G'day Folks,

I was wondering what your experiences are for

"Cars that you thought would be great but weren't"

For me I thought that an XJ Jag coupe would be the dog's bollocks

A really nice looking car in my opinion.

But man it must be a dog to own.

The build quality on these cars (especially the series III) is terrible. Inside they are tiny for the size of the car (if you get what I mean?).

The 4.2L engine seems to just give hideous fuel economy - with out much fun. If fitted with a LPG system it just feels like an unresponsive bus.

Inside they are dark and dingy - step out of an XJ and into a Mercedes of the same era and you feel like you've moved from a cave to a green house!

Has any other car ever been such a disappointment?

Volvo....not too bad but not a mercedes in ride/handling or quality.

Peugot....same deal but not as high quality as volvo. Drove as well as a mercedes though.

85 Ford one ton van with 6.9 diesel....truck from hell, lost more on that one than any three other cars.

XJ coupe is one of the most beautiful cars ever made but they do feel cramped inside.

I would say the Range Rover Sport is disappointing, looks huge from the outside but is tiny in the inside and I'm only 6.1. And like any Range Rover drives like a boat.

And just recently I drove an Audi A6 looks great but what a boring car to drive.

BMW E31. The 8 series. Looked good. Had a 12 cylinder engine. Made by the same people that gave us the E30, E24, E28, and the E34.

But what a letdown. Performance, comfort, and reliability, all subpar.

I had an XJ12C, paid real money for it, thinking this would quinch my XKE jones..... Horrible car, drained me $ wise, just like a lovely girl with a bad coke habit and just as reliable.

2001 Mercedes C240. Bought it new when they first came out in late 2000. It was a GREAT driving car with a six speed manual. It had so many electronic gremlins I finally bailed out with less than 40K miles as I recall. Took a beating on it. I thought that since it was a Mercedes, you could buy the first one off the boat with no worries. Boy was I wrong!

I wonder how long it will take for an Alfa to make its debut?

(There are some nice looking cars made by them - but like the XJC they seem to suck your wallet dry)

If you absolutely must, settle for nothing less than a 850CSi. It's the best of the bunch, and in many ways, delivers upon the promises the looks of the car makes.

I wish they'd made an "M" version, one without all the luxury crap. If the weight came down, the potential is there.

I'm always been told to avoid the 12 cylinders at all cost, because those cars will clean you out.

The W124 4-matic, or more commonly known as “proble-matic” series.
