Interesting saying I read in Reader's Digest today...

I was reading a story about a father and son that were at the complete opposite spectrum of politics, dad being a Republican and son a Democrat, and how discussions about politics nearly ruined their relationship.

In the story was this little gem... Liberals love humanity but hate people. Conservatives love people but hate humanity. The author brought it up after explaining how he hated his father's right wing thinking, but remembers many times how his father would volunteer to help others often. I found that to make a lot of sense.

I wish I could find that story, or give you the month and year that it was published, but I don't have the magazine...it was in the doctor's office this afternoon.

In the end, the son found that politics was mush less important that quality time with his father.

A touching story, indeed, but the line above in itallics really jumped out to me.

What's your take on it?

. . . I never touch the magazines in doctors offices.

However, on my iPod I might be listening to "Father & Son" by former Cat Stevens; or Chicago's "Dialogue (Part 1 & 2)

Any one who allows politics to interfere with their familial relationships is a moron.

The 'little gem' is, IMHO, pure claptrap.

Sounds like a ring of truth to it--allowing, of course, that all generalizations are false.

I find it odd that a self professed liberal would write it in the manner in which he did, if it's pure claptrap.

From the article...

Quote:
I forced myself to pay closer attention to my father’s life. While he was occasionally bellicose in his rhetoric, in everyday life, he was a different person. Actually, he was probably the most open and tolerant person I knew, my supposedly tolerant friends included. He had a warm, southern hello for total strangers in my Brooklyn neighborhood, socialized with liberal retirees in his own North Carolina neighborhood, had a gay photographer friend in town with whom he traded camera tips, and spent every Wednesday delivering food to the housebound. It reminded me of the old adage: Liberals love humanity but dislike people; conservatives dislike humanity but love people.

The wife collects the hard cover compilation books. She has 1 or 1000 of them I think.

Claptrap.

For one thing "liberal" and "conservative" make better adjectives than nouns. For another, it is preposterous to think that one word can encapsulate whole groups of individuals.

Liberal people don't love people or humanity any more or less than do conservative people.

Read the article...they're his words. I personally think that it classifies what he's seen quite well. Heck, it does the same for what I've seen. Besides...it's not a conservative that wrote it.

From the article...
Why, because it suggests something that you believe?
I believe that claptrap comes in both red and blue.
And that generalizations are generally false.

Self professed liberal.... Taking a lot on faith for a story from Readers digest, guy is as likely a dyed in the wool RWNJ.

If you check his writing for New York Magazine, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair . . . not a RWNJ.

The saying seems like it fits. Its not a one size fits all but close.

Btw, The word claptrap isnt as catchy as hyperbole. Claptrap sounds like a name for an old prostitute... Just sayin..

Presumably not. Doesn't make his little homily any more accurate.

Of course, he outlines the way 'conservatives' dislike humanity but love people, but never works out the antecedent.
Sloppy writing at best, not enough to encourage me to read more of his work.

Please share how it is even close.

Claptrap is simple and homey, like the author. I thought it fit quite well.

Very wise. They are covered with germs that will require repeat visits. I learned about this at the aluminum foil hat forum.
