Who do you respect in the opposing party? Past or Present

I am a fiscal conservative and a social liberal, Libertarian is probably the best label for me. I will not vote for Romney or Obama.

In the current Republican party, I respect the Congressman from my district, Ron Paul. If he were running again, I would vote for him. That was easy. If Ron Paul had retired two years ago, I don't know if I could name a current Republican I respect (at least at the state or national level, my friend Billy is a Republican constable but that doesn't count).

Historically, I think that Eisenhower was the most honorable Republican President since Teddy Roosevelt. He knew his limitations and assembled a terrific cabinet to help guide him through very tough decisions, like bringing Federal troops to Little Rock to enforce integration and taking personal responsibility for the Gary Powers fiasco. He did not seek power or glory and warned us against the military-industrial complex.

For current Democrats, I would have to say Hillary Clinton. She should have been the Democratic candidate in 2008, but she sucked it up, didn't complain, and is doing a decent job of handling the totally messed up foreign policy she is saddled with.

Historically, I think Jimmy Carter was the best person (not President) to hold the office in the last 80 years. Hoover was also a great person. Carter came into office and immediately got hit with the results of the Nixon-Ford price controls, the anti-smog regulations on cars and a second round of Arab oil embargos.

Carter did not blame his failure on the previous administration, but attempted to deal with the situation himself. Unfortunately for him and the country, he chose a poorly qualified cabinet to help him.

You forgot about GWB Sr. Now there was a fellow who was a good individual who sought to do the right thing even if it cost him the election.

Doesn't stick in the minds of most people due to the poor speaking manner, but he did a fine job as the President. His results were far better than Carter.

Although I agree that GHWB was a good man in many ways and that his handling of the gulf war was very good, I disagree that he was good in other ways. Under him the economy languished.

I also think he was in the Iran contra scandle up to his ears and somehow avoided prosecution.

That's pretty much me on a national level, too. I don't have an opposing party per se since I can't stomach either party on the national (and general) level, but I did register Republican so that I can vote in the state primaries and generally vote Republican in local and state elections with hopes that, some day, single-party rule will end in CT. Talk about pissing into the wind!

That said, none from either party nationally. Re-election is their only concern and they'll say whatever they have to to ensure it.

There was nothing scandalous about Iran Contra. The media made it into one. Nothing more powerful than a biased news media.

The ONLY democrat President in my life worth ANYTHING was Harry Truman. LBJ is the only President I ever met face to face and he has to have been the biggest slime ball President ever and he has some stiff competition in that area.

Ronald Reagan was a LEADER. Wish he would have left leadership lessons in the Oval Office for his predecessors although GHWB had a little leadership skill. Eisenhower was a GREAT general and an acceptable President.

Those comments done, niether party is worth a bucket of warm spit, but for now, that's all we have.

George Washington's party.

He didn't believe in political parties, publicly warned against them and didn't have one.

You believe the President can influence the economy in any significant way?

Today we got one that pours money into the economy it and it doesn't really change much.

If you do believe such rubbish, see if you can post some support for that position.

I am certain I could not convince you.

But the economy was what got GHWB beaten by Clinton.

So apparently a majority of people voting then agreed with me.

I guess Larry has forgotten the criminal trial surrounding it. As I remember Cap Weinberger was convicted but pardoned by the president he took the fall for.

Truman is probably my favorite of all time.

No, Ross Perot caused the election of Clinton.
