And now for more car content...

Rare 1971 Plymouth Hemi

Quote:
Scottsdale, Ariz. – (October 8, 2012) – Barrett-Jackson, the World’s Greatest Collector Car Auctions™, announced today that it will offer one of the most desirable Mopar muscle cars ever built – the FC7-In Violet Plymouth HEMI ‘Cuda Convertible, one of one in 1971 – as part of its exclusive Salon Collection at its famed Scottsdale auction, January 19, 2013.

Ohhhh man. Such a sweet ride.

Hatty, want to go halves?

Sure, I'll kick in $1.5m and you kick the same in and we might be in the running.

Just no top speed runs!

Yes, what a ride is right. When I was in high school in the Detroit area I went out with a very pretty, but very prudish girl. Her father was a Chrysler mid-level manager who happened to have a 1970 Hemi Cuda hardtop with a four-speed.

The father's deal was that if you didn't kiss his daughter, he let you drive the Cuda for the date.

Somehow every date ended up with us going to Farrell's Ice Cream on Telegraph Rd. At the time, Telegraph Rd between 6 Mile and 8 Mile was the drag racing capital of the Midwest. Amazing how many times I missed the turn for Farrell's and had to race some idiot to the next intersection so I could turn around.

Nice and all, but over-the-top restored muscle cars (typical of Barrett-Jackson) don't do it for me anymore. Very 1990's

I am a fan of properly restored cars of any era. Over-restored-which seems to be the new standard--turns me off. BC/CC buffed to a mirror glaze on a '30s era, mass-produced car is just wrong. It might be a pretty finish, but does not represent the way it came off the assembly line. There should be a class for these cars, but they should not be called "restored". IMO, "restored" means that the end product accurately reflects the way it was originally assembled. I view car restorers as maintainers of our automotive history.

What a WASTE! They put an automatic transmission behind that wonderful engine. Very sad!

Agreed, pistol grip 4 speed is more appropriate...

Old Mopars are cool. When I was a kid a great uncle who lived in Phx. bought his wife a new 59 Imperial, I think the 413 wedgehead motor, positraction and pushbutton torqueflite. It was you-know-what pink, had a continental trunk lid and I swear at least 4 cigarette lighters. He could light up the tires on that tank with the push of a button

I agree with you partially -- if the car is going into a museum, to never be driven again, correct total restoration
makes sense.

But - if it is going to be driven, on public road ---- well that is another story. I really like to read stories that depict old classic restored cars cleverly updated with disc brakes, variable ratio/rack and pinion power steering, updated shocks and suspension, cruise control, and modern equipment that makes them safer and more fun to enjoy as long distance and all around drivers.

To adhere to the "black letter" of your theory, it would be wrong to restore a Ford Pinto to "factory spec's" and remove the plastic waffle between the gas tank and the differential, that prevented them from exploding when hit from the rear, and the gas tank got shoved into the differential and the explosion occurred; just so FoMoCo could save a $2 part, and if I recalled, it was done on purpose EVEN after the accountants decided it was cheaper to pay the inujury and death lawsuits than install the little plastic waffle.

~~~
What you said reminded me of a street race on a 2 lane country road I got into back in 1996 right about when I had been just married, for not that long, with my 1991 560SEC with my wife in the car.
A dude in a bronze 1957 Chevy Bel Air coupe, beautifully restored, took exception to my passing him, and the car must have had a hopped up 350 or a Vette engine, and so he raced me tying to get ahead.
What he did not know, though, was the 560SEC had a top speed of 149 mph out of the factory, and was engineered to run at its top speed all day, like all MB's of the time.
I beat him of course, at about 120mph he crapped out or lost his nerve, but he was with his family too and really was humiliated to lose, in front of them.
Idiotic of both of us, of course, and you can't believe the screaming and abuse the wife gave me - after that (a harbinger of things to come, in that horrid marriage, I now know today)
Jim,
I am not much of a fan of museum pieces. Cars were made to be driven. My preference would be to drive them, even the "restored" ones--but choose the roads carefully to match the vehicle. Trying to drive a Model T ( top speed about 40) on a modern Interstate would be dangerous for every vehicle on the road, but driving the same Model T on low speed roads with out a lot of traffic ( and giving consideration for those behind you) would be very enjoyable and proper.
The nice thing about the car hobby is that there is room for almost everyone and everyone's differing opinions--even if they are wrong ( i.e. disagree with me)
