carry on a thermos?
The mrs is flying to pensacola on friday for a long weekend with our son and his family. When I was there two weeks ago I left my all metal stanley thermos. If it is empty can she carry it on the plane on the way home?

I don't know, but I'd hate to be without my old Stanley. You have my sympathy. She isn't checking a bag?

Only if it is free (on checking bag).

Can't make any promises, but based on my experience....
I sometimes have to travel with chilled medicines. Metal Stanley with a syringe & a small cold pak have gone through in my carry ons multiple times. I do have a copy of the prescription taped on the outside of the thermos & I take it out and explain what's going on to the agent up front.

As long as the container is empty, it can pass thru carry on inspection.

I couldn't live without my old Stanley. Dad carried for a number of years before he passed it to me.
As long as it's empty, and maybe even with the lids off, it should be ok.

other option if the question is up in the air, is to mail it to yourself before getting to the airport.
Id say just have your son drop it in the mail for you.

You can carry empty containers onto the plane. I routinely take a 1 liter Nalgene water bottle through security and fill it from a drinking fountain inside the terminal. Done it dozens of times.

Your wife being both female and older tends to give her some lattitude. Statistically she is not in a high risk group. Or at least in the profile area they look at more carefully in my opinion.
Thermos empty I see no issues. She or you could call the authorities in advance to verify. Get the name of the individual stating it is okay if so. Last edited by barry12345; 10-23-2012 at 07:31 PM. |

I've had my half gallon Stanley Stainless Thermos for about 37 years. I poured a cup of coffee out of it about 15 minutes ago.
My wife bought it for me because when leaving work I had to get out of the car to lock the gate. My old fashion glass thermos would roll out and break about once a week. After a few of those she took care of the problem. I don't know how much the old glass ones cost, but even if they were only a buck, this old thermos would have saved me about $1,924 since that time.

My son wanted to take my ancient Stanley off to college. Guess again buckwheat, I told him. You've already got my Gilette FatBoy razor. Get yer own thermos. He bought a new one at WalMart but it weighs about a third what mine weighs and doesn't work nearly as well. He's since found an old one at a thrift shop and replaced the stopper and gave his new one away. Smart boy. Bright as a hundred watt bulb.

Get a new stainless steel Nissan, they're great. Stanley has a few that meet the old standards, but Aladdin/Thermos seems to have "sold out" for price. The key to getting the best performance from any thermal bottle is to pre-chill or pre-heat before filling.

I don't know if the old ones are superior, but I know that my half gallon one that has a "D 76" date code stamped on the bottom is nothing short of amazing. Takes a licking and keeps on ticking. Keeps on insulating too.
I routinely get home in the afternoon, rinse it out and fill it with hot water. The water is still VERY hot the next morning when I pour it out and pour a pot of fresh, hot coffee in its place. Most weekends at one point during the weekend I pour it full of boiling water from a tea kettle and pour that out in about five minutes. This is according to the cleaning instructions stamped on the bottom. The weekends when I do not clean it with boiling water, I pour out the water on Sunday night that was hot on Friday evening. After that 48 hours the water is not hot, but it is pretty darn warm. I assume that you can still buy these new, and if so, I fully expect that it would be a worthwhile purchase. If it's not as good as the "good ol' days" versions, I expect it's only a marginal difference.

You can still get new cups and stoppers for the old ones. Mine definitely keeps temp better than sonny's new one.
