NYT Review of BMW M5 & 6

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/21/automobiles/autoreviews/faster-but-not-so-furious-m-cars-mature.html?_r=0

There’s a sense that technical proficiency has upstaged old-time BMW fun. As they devour the road, taming every difficult passage, these M’s are tuxedo-clad prodigies in a hushed concert hall. The performance amazes, but you find yourself craving the raw, rude fire of the Beastie Boys.

The advice in the article . . . buy a standard 5-Series AND a sports car for the weekends is the way I would go if I had six figures to spend on road going machinery.

I'd rather have a CLK Black.

AMG doesn't have to pipe the exhaust into the cabin threw the speakers...they just make it loud.

Nice review, however for that much money, I could buy an old 320i and a house with a garage to park it in.

I tried to talk my Mom into an M5. No dice, no AWD. She ordered a Cayenne S instead. Takes 3 months for Porsche to build. Cayenne's are lame, but heck, she is 75 yrs old.

Sorry to hear that. The very idea of Porsche building an SUV doesn't sit right with me. The fact that it's probably not much better off road than my 300D really sickens me.

What's she want AWD for anyway? Does she go off road a lot? Do they not have snow plows in her area?

Hey, it's better than an MDX or whatever..... plus she's old -give her a break.

They have a long steep drive that isn't always plowed when she wants it plowed.

The idea of putting an 80 lb Lab in a tight back seat doesn't sit with her well either. We drove the Panamera S AWD as well and she really liked it. Back seat is way too small for her dog.

Those M6's are nice-looking and sounding cars. Somebody that works in my building has one. Whenever he drives by me, I love the sound of that exhaust. Doesn't take a thing away from the C63, though . . . .

Oh man, you need to listen to a Quatroporte idle, and then accellerate away.

Nothing in the world like it.

i would love to bottle and sell that sound.

The old M6 has the V10 and the new motor is a turbocharged 8.

It also (at least the M5) has the artificial engine noise played through the speakers.

Newer BMW's spec a very long oil change interval. I believe if one were to change the oil a bit more, that sludge issue might well go away.

Let's hope that the long interval isn't related to the "included maintenance" they tout.
