A buddy brought over his new toys yesterday

What can you make out of a welding gas cylinder, an old bowling ball and a full pound of black powder? More fun than shooting rats at the dump.

Nice! How hard was it to capture that shot with the ball in it?

Easier if your camera was HD and allowed for stills to be pulled from the video stream.

Nikon D80 set to the smallest file size, autoexposure and in continuous shooting mode. If you use the smallest file size it'll shoot up to 3 frames per second. Started shooting a bit after the fuse was lit and just stayed on it.

Absolutely childish, irresponsible, mindless grown-up-little-boys-who-ought-to-know-better downright pointless expensive FUN.

we did need some kids to chase after the balls though. He only had three.

Talking

Oh god, that's AWESOME!

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!

When the Confederates shot those in the Civil War, they'd often heat the cannonballs up really hot first, hoping when they'd land they would set fire to whatever they hit.

Looks like you guys had a blast!

On a side note, I love shooting high speed shots. My D80 used to be my main camera, but now it just sits in my cabinet. My D300 is my main camera now, it's faster too. If I were there I would have gone crazy and wasted 20 shots just to get the best, sharpest capture, after testing the settings first

Lord, a pound of black powder? I wouldn't have been within sight of that cylinder; you could put an eye out.

Clk likes bacon, I like black powder (and bacon...but not together).

yup. that sucker is a real live mortar. takes a bit of boom to launch a 16 pound bowling ball a few hundred yards.

just short of where you see the two-track disappear is where the ball landed.

Cool doesn't even begin to describe that damned thing, it's like a Coehorn! I'll bet that made a BIG noise too!

hmmm...I have a couple of chopped off cylinders...what makes you think it won't burst the bottom end of the cylinder when you set a pound of FFg loose in there?

Correction. I just called him to confirm powder. He used a pound total in three shots, so it's more like 5 ounces each plus a tad. Sorry about that.

I've heard a lot of really loud carbide cannons and seen reinactments with old military cannon, but I don't believe I've personally heard anything louder. I stayed about 100 ft. back from the thing and turned my shooting phones OFF for the second and third shots.

I see there are a bunch of plans online for these things.....
