Camera help needed
 

OK.
Too many complaints about picture (blue) color shift on my old cannon camera.
Best guess, it hit the shop floor to many times + it eats AA batteries + has a five second delay between shots. :(

My daughter insists the replacement should be a Nikon camera..

Her thought is a "Nikon S600" is enough "camera techno babble" to do the job, and cheap to replace when it gets demolished.

Considering where and how it will be used, shop DIY pictures.
My thought is:
# A new camera.
# Good used camera.
# Refurbished camera.

I have been thoroughly confused by "camera techno babble". :confused:

What I need is:
* Take pictures of cars and parts.
* Carbon black on black (filthy parts) in low or no light.
* Freshly machined parts under intense inspection lighting.
* Close up shots from 12-28 inches to show cracks/damage.
* Many shots from 4-8 feet.
* Car event pictures up to 400 yards.

Suggestions with a minimum of "camera techno babble" (directed to me) are very welcome. :)

Roy, feel free to look at the pictures on my Facebook. I have a folder of pictures that I've taken with the above camera. It's perfect for those of us that just want a camera to do what a camera is supposed to do...take pictures of whatever we point it at. My wife and I have been very pleased with how easy it is to use, as well as the quality of the pictures and camera.

Don't let the bambino decide on the camera, because you're likely to get much more camera than you need, and wind up paying for a camera for her instead of for you.

I asked a similar question recently.

I ended up buying a fuji finepix FJ420

I don't recommend it but it was seriously cheap. It cost less than 60 euros.

It takes pictures slightly faster than my old canon and the internal battery is a step up from all of those AA batteries I used to go through; but the auto-dooh-dah-all-singing-and-dancing-piss-you-off-hold-that-'king-button-down behaviour of the camera really gets on my wick!

Just a note: Blue shift is likely because you have the white balance set on "Daylight" or some other fixed setting rather than "Automatic".

My Nikon took over 500 pictures before needing the AA batteries replaced. When they did finally go, I was able to pick up another set at the local gas station/mini mart.

It was one of the features I liked about it due to my inability to remember to recharge the specialty batteries as well as the cost of the specialty batteries.

Go with a good used Canon G9. Those things are study as heck and picture quality is superb. Dee8go and I use them and have not been disappointed!

Ha! On a cold day my canon once managed to take 3 pictures before the new duracell magic bunnies had to be shot and replaced...

Get a real, mechanical, film camera and you don't need no stinking batteries. And the resolution is better.

LOL and only take 30 some odd pictures and have to pay to get them developed, transferred to a disc then uploaded to the PC.

My Canon T3's battery lasts an amazingly long time. But a T3 is probably not too workshop friendly.

I have an old PowerShot SD400 that did pretty well. Small, light weight, good battery life, only 5 MP resolution though. Pales in comparison to the T3.

Bump for "MBeige", our resident ace photographer, to chime in on this one.

The notion that film resolution is always better than digital has been an old wives' tale for at least 5 years, especially with 35mm. With high end large format cameras it might be true still.

The dynamic range is better of film. Digital beats film in resolution; but are hold back if you use lenses designed for film.

Hey Whunter, get one that you wont mind if it gets dropped or broken, one that wont be too expensive to replace, Check your local Craiglist for a decent point and shoot, sounds like what you are kinda lookin for, even better if it still matches your current memory cards.

I will try to check the cannon light settings for automatic, but still want to replace it.

My daughter has a six month old Nikon S6100 = total cost $300.00 USD.

I consider any camera under $100.00 disposable for shop work.

Speed, picture capacity and video have become important.
I am looking for SIMPLE free audio/video editing software, for SIMPLE video cutting and voice over.

Hmm...
If I get one of these COOLPIX S6100, I can share batteries and memory cards with my daughter, she has eight spares of each.
