Quick-thinking bus driver avoids serious injuries

Still, it had to be pretty scary heading off the road and towards trees.

Quote:
It appeared the crash was caused after an outer-rear wheel came off the bus while it was still in motion, investigators told NBCPhiladelphia.com. An inner-rear tire was also found to be attached to a bent axle. Investigators were still trying to determine the exact cause of the crash.

What school corp was it?

In our local corp we kept the busses for about 10 years 1ooK miles, they then got sold to smaller school corps and private schools who tend to run them another 100k and ten years, they then go places like panama and probably all over south america where they prolly go another 300K or so.

Its very surprising to me they had what appears to be a broken wheel or siezed axle????

Rear wheel on right looks intact. How would a failed left rear wheel put the bus off the road on the right?

Probably not a simple case of a failed wheel "digging in" but rather the bus swerving all over the freeway before coming off on one side.

Put on brakes with three wheels, two of which are on the right side, perhaps that would turn the bus. The bare brake drum would not provide much stopping power.

Maybe no PRE TRIP inspection by bus driver to notice 1. Cracks from Stud-hole to Studhole or 2. loose lug nuts. Either condition could cause what happened. Stud holds inside rim to wheel and lug nut secures outside wheel.

"Bent Axle". Someone didn't secure the wheel bearings properly- probably the same person who didn't torque the wheel studs.
Being that is was the left side wheel, rotation probably unscrewed the bearing retaining nuts.

its written oddly, is the inner rear tire they refer to the driver side one? Doesn't look like it from the pics, but that wheel could be buried if its there

Seems to me that the bent axle could possibly be a result of the accident itself, with the tires coming off a fully loaded bus, and the rear end slamming down on one side.
