There's the saying that respect is earned, not given.
In BC's case, he's earned my respect. His style may be short on words, seem gruff and irritating at times, and you may totally disagree with what he says - but he gives it to you straight up and honest without any BS. I much prefer that to someone who'll feed polite words to your face - while reaching for their figurative knife to stick in your back. I'll say something else - I can't remember seeing him publicly call anyone anything stronger than DB - even in political threads, where terms like racist, bigot, homophobe, etc, are slung about freely. For those that want to get personal and nasty, he can humble you without using a single four letter word, or any that would be out of place in polite conversation. These days, I can definitely appreciate that ability and restraint.

I also had a bet that he owed on. I wasn't going to press the issue, but he contacted me to ask what charity he should send the check.
I never had any doubt that he would pay up. He and I disagree on a lot of things, but he has continually displayed his intellectual honesty. Folks who are intellectually honest also pay their bills.
