Auto plastics linked to breast cancer

I used to wonder about it when I was driving new Chrysler products, with their acres of interior plastics.

Auto plastics industry linked to breast cancer, new study shows - thestar.com

There has been talk about this for some time as a source of environmental allergy issues as well.

Supposedly even the new car smell is a carcinogen. Could be linked to the plastics within? Although, it is all relevant, considering how routine it is for people to buy water in plastic bottles that have sat on the shelf for who knows how long. I take my chances and just drink plain old tap water out of a glass.

Many bottled waters are in fact essentially tap water, possibly with some added minerals. Ridiculous that what you get essentially for free can be sold for $3 per quart.

Yeah, I'll take my chances on tap water run through a Brita pot over tap water that's been sitting in a plastic bottle that leached oestrogen analogues into it.

I concur! We've all fallen for the maketing ploy that somehow bottled water is the only safe source of water. Some day they'll be a Monsanto out there that creates some engineered water and we'll all have to buy it from them.

Generally yes, unless you live in a third world country.

All the components in a Brita pitcher, except for the charcoal, are plastic.

Actually, there are parts of the US that are beaten by third world countries.

You can order glass Brita pitchers from outside the US.

However, even the plastic ones are better than bottled water. Hard plastic is less likely to leach, water is generally stored under cold conditions for hours to days, as opposed to under unknown heat for weeks to a year.

There is an area of Texas, just south of the city of Dickens, where the water is not fit to drink due to high amounts of gypsum.

The locals call it 'gyp water', and most homes are built with a large cistern to catch rainwater for drinking and cooking.

A Brita filter is good for 40 gallons, Amazon sells filters for about $6 each. $0.15 per gallon for a filter that removes . . . mostly chlorine and heavy metals (lead, copper) but not micro-organisms. In short, it mostly makes the water taste less like it was from the swimming pool, which some may equate to being clean.

The well is ok depending on what is upstream from you.

Many chemicals mimic hormones and are suspect for cancers, especially in women.

Plant phenols from ancient plants trapped in crude oil are implicated in the allergy crisis. Since they existed before our immune systems existed they skirt our defenses. Some think there may also be a link to some cancers. Plastics are also petro chemicals.

I wouldn't worry about it. You are talking about two different things altogether. One is standing in plastic with poor ventilation and the other is driving in a car that has new plastic that ages. I don't worry about water in a glass but I do worry about water in a pool that is over my head.
