December 21, 2012: Were The Maya Right???

Just curious what you guys think. Personally, I don;t think the world will end, but perhaps some events could change the course of human history.

Thoughts????

The Mayans were interesting folks. If I could have two questions answered about them;
1. Where did they go?
2. How did they have such detailed maps of the earth (even the polar caps under ice)

Why didn't they factor in leap year? End of the world should have happened months ago.

Their calender was a venus based system and not so Gregorian or quasi lunar based as ours.

By the way the carved stone in the cartoon is the Aztec Calendar not Mayan. Many people confuse both cultures. The Aztecs believed that the world could end every 52 years so they would make offerings to the god(s) to prevent it. One of the 52 year old cycles is believed to end on Dec 21,2012 which coincides with the supposed end of the long running Mayan Calendar.

I don't believe it. I lived through the mountains of Y2K twaddle and I plan to be here on December 13 as well.

Also I thought it had been established that the Maya were wiped out by disease brought by the spaniards?

The civilization might have disappeared but the people are still there speaking many different Mayan dialects. The new migration of farm workers in California are actually of mayan descent. There is an old saying that says that the land belongs to those who work it...

The myth of an empty frontier / Explorers' diseases wiped out native populations long before settlers arrived - SFGate
.

Many Native Americans(Mexico, South America, U.S) were affected by Small Pox but there were also Europeans that were also affected by diseases that the natives were immune to. Small pox was a big part of the wipe out

An interesting book about Mayans Ive read recently put a twist on the structure of the temples ,most are built higher than any of the highest ground in the surrounding area,this gave thought to how these were more like bunkers than temples.Then ties possible events in their calender to a reoccuring celestial event ,mentioning meteor impacts ,all which if witnessed by them would be an all life changing event.The newly found conjioned evidence how the impact zone that ended life for the dinosaurs is in this same region ,then compels the thought that this related earth debree may be revisiting an earth ordit on cue.Splice this all together seems odd, but science and fiction sometime comes out plausible.

As I recall, they unearthed more calendar recently that extends further than 2012, but I guess it's hard to keep up with archeological news when you're busy churning out foil hats.

I am more concerned about mankind's hysteria surrounding this event than a Mayan curse...
