Modern aftermarket fuel injection for gas engines?

Can anyone recommend a modern system that can be bought and applied to an older engine. I am now thinking of using a studebaker v8 in my Coupe Express and am thinking of ways to make it more fuel efficient and more green, if it is not too prohibitive in cost.

One DIY system everyone seems to like is the Megasquirt/Microsquirt family of systems.

They started out as a total build from scratch system but they've evolved into selling complete bolt-in systems.

Personally, I'd use a Microsquirt.

I know Holley makes a system, but I don't know anyone who's used it, so I don't know if it's any good.

For price v/s performance nothing comes close to megasquirt. Technical support from the online community is likely unmatched either. Given that it is a very universal system you can install it on most any engine in multiple configurations. Just figure out how you want to do it and prepare the M/S to suit.

That is encouraging. I went to their website though And understood nothing. I know of a fellow who is a whiz with this sort of thing though, so I will get in touch with him.

Thanks Jake! I'll check it out.

just did. I like the looks of it. Simple. Anybody have direct experience with it?

Tom, check out some Jeep forums and IHC forums, lots of people fed up with carbs go that way.

Thanks Jake! I talked with my Indie about it a bit today. He thinks they are probably ok. He asked if it can be tuned with a laptop. I assume yes but am not sure.

The projection is basically an electronic carburetor. I don't know just how much fabrication you're willing to deal with, but you could take a late model individual injector system off an engine of similar size as your V8, machine the holes for the injectors into the manifold and arrange a throttle body along with the various sensors and set up a pretty darn good port injection system. It would be much better than the electronic carburetor.

Again, much of it is determined by how much fabrication you want to do.

The younger "tuner" crowd is very familiar with these systems. You could probably get some free help at your local CC or High School Auto classes.
My son is talking about installing a Mega-squirt system on his 190e. Looks doable. Tie it into an O2 sensor and adjust with a laptop.

I need something quick and dirty. I am not capable of building something from scratch, though I might be able to get some skilled folks I know to make it.

if you had a SBC there is quick and dirty 350 throttle body and a JY ecm and harness. thats about the only cheap ready to go stuff, custom redux for a smaller engine -wether its MS or JY-gm is a steep learning curve, the gm stuff everone uses is the 88-91ish obd1 stuff which has a data stream about 3-4 times faster than the earlier gm stuff, there are guys didoing 4, 6 and 8 cyl stuff-and retrofiting to many other non gm engines--but it takes hacking the chip, opening the bin files and changing the values to fit the odd engine.

I own the Holley system and I was going to adapt it to my UNIMOG. Since I bought it however, I have decided that I much prefer the Micro/Megasquirt. It's far more flexible and tunable with a laptop.

The Holley system has a series of knobs on the ECU for idle mixture, accelerator pump and a couple other functions.

If it were an SBC there are ZILLIONS of choices, some of them super cheap, like simply bolting on and wiring up the manifold from a late eighties or early nineties Vette or many other super cheap wrecking yard sources.

Tom, if putting it together quick is your goal, then the ProJection might be your answer, but don't expect it to be significantly more efficient than a properly dialed in Holley carburetor.
