I'll never forget his role on an episode of NCIS, where he played a WWII vet who was a recipient of the CMOH. His role in 'Oh, Brother Where Art Thou' was good, too.
He played so many great roles, better than anyone else ever could have.

His role as the Governor in 'Best Little Whorehouse in Texas' was so close to the real thing it was if he had been coached by someone, someone like Larry King who wrote the original story, who knew firsthand how Governors in Texas operate.

Being raised by a Vet that was awarded the Bronze Star (with two mustard stains) and having a close friend who's father was awarded the CMOH posthumously for his actions in Vietnam, I have great respect for the heroic actions associated with the Silver Star.

"Several months later, in Belgium, Durning was stabbed eight times by a bayonet-wielding teenage German soldier. That day, he survived by killing the German with a rock in hand-to-hand combat. Durning recovered from those wounds and was released from the hospital just in time to fight in the Battle of the Bulge, where he was taken prisoner."
