And there I was expecting pictures of girls trying on clothes.....
Not entirely sure, but I believe a half union is one piece, threaded on both ends and converts from one spec. to another and is a 'type' of union. A regular union would be a two piece item that threads together in the middle to allow for the pipe on either side to be separated. Pretty much guessing, but maybe someone who actually knows will answer for you...

I suspect the illustrations with the descriptions may not be accurate. Just a wild ass guess though. Basically I see no palatable differance. Maybe trying a search engine could turn up something to answer the question. What is shown to me look like termination fittings or access fitings.
a union to me joins two pipes or whatever together a half union is not too practical in my mind. Again I am not a plumber or pipefitter though so make allowances. Knowing you somewhat from your posts I hope this is not a trick question. A half union is perhaps where you do not quite get it on and a full union is kind of self explanitory. |

They both look about the same. They are threaded on both ends. The lower end seem to be 1/8 MTP but the top is threaded for a cap and to allow a fuel pressure gauge to screw on.

One is a Union with a permanent cap
and the other has a removeable cap so it can be used as a union or a terminator.

I thought both have removable caps?

Does it matter what the difference is? Item 1 is no longer available, so you can't get it at Grainger.

But, but, but, it may be still available elsewhere.

True but is Item2 a close unit or way off base? Should I be asking for Unit1 which I have on one of my cars or what is closest at another place or will Unit2 work?

I think that the two items shown in the opening post are nominally equivalent fittings. Whether they are of the same quality or not, I have no idea.
It appears to me that this is an item where Grainger is moving over from one vendor (JB Industries; claimed to be made in the USA) to another source. In this case, they aren't specifically naming the other vendor, but they note that the country of origin is China. If you look at the catalog page, there are a number of cases where two variants of a given fitting are listed, but the one that's "on the way out" is listed as "limited availability". This is one of those items. If you have a particular desire for the JB branded fitting - I think it's their A31482 - then you can buy it elsewhere. With the part number, they're easy enough to find on eBay: new old stock newer stock |

Very interesting Eskimo. That might allow me to buy a single unit instead of all 5. I will have to call them Monday

I believe they are both half unions, but the descriptions are not very accurate.

Those parts are half unions because one side is 1/8" MPT (Male Pipe Thread - a tapered thread sealed with dope or tape, not routinely separated) and the other side at least on one is a 1/8" flare union male that a flare union female connection could attach to. The other part while the same 1/8" MPT on one side,on the other side instead of the 1/8" flare is a 1/4" of unspecified type. Both have integral Schrader valves and closing caps. The second part very likely is a flare also, it's spec'd for refrigerants so that usually is used to fill or connect a gage set to a system, and they usually use some type of flair union. Flare fittings do not use tapered pipe thread but a straight cut thread. |
