Buddy just sold his E320 with 200K, its For Sale again, but only has 117K now

Its on Portland CL

Dark Green 1996 Mercedes E320 $3500

The Add reads as follows:

automatic
loaded
leather
all power options
owned a couple years, drives great
has 117k miles
never been in an accident
clean title
very very comfortable
one rear windown doesnt roll down , thats the only problem car has
two small tears in seat, nothing major
call 971###2952####681

just the way he listed his phone number looks sketchy.

The guy has owned it for about 1 month and he didnt even bother to fix the same window that was broke when he bought it from my friend @ 200K miles for a little over $2000
Other than the mileage and the length of time he has owned it the rest is true.
Cant you get into big trouble for that? the mileage thing that is.

Salvage Yard Speedo

I've seen this before, and it is easier that rolling the clock back.

Down in NC there was a human flotsam that would buy late model high mileage fleet cars from the local rental company and had 2 kids prowling the yars for same make speedo clusters with 20K or so miles on the clock.

30 min in the shop and "POOF" a cream puff low mileage vehicle sold to a Military person since they either rotated out of the area or couldn't get justice in the local courts.

You should let the local authorities know, recently they busted a "tombstoner" here in NYC for doing the same with used cars brought in from Penna.

About the same as the slimebucket guys who were buying MB flood cars off the dealers back lot and cleaning them up, putting them in a container and shipping them to Colombia!

This is an OBDII car and I would suspect that the mileage is embedded in one of the computers. I think that someone with the correct software is noodling around and resetting things.

That, or the entire part that contains the mileage is swapped out.

Does this change the odometer reading on the dash and the mileages stored in the computers also?

USDOJ: Civil: CPB: Open Cases

If someone were to buy the car, discover that they had been taken, drink it off at the bar, get a dui, they would probably suffer the weight of the law more than the seller.

It would be kind of fun for someone who knows the history of the car, and who can prove it, were to buy that vehicle and then start a fraud suit against the seller. I bet it would return a lot more than the selling price.

Also, in many states, when a vehicle is sold the mileage is reported. Is this not the case in Oregon?

The group or person who started Carfax came up with a valuable source of information to a shopper who maybe looking for a used car ,Mileage.Knowing that most states take the mileage down when issuing a new state sticker, theyve resourced this information is an accessable data from the state. That data cannot be faked ,a yr to yr fingerprint of the cars mileage recorded ,if it doesnt match the carfax report then the sight will give up a red flag on this important fact ,one lie probably follows another.

mileage laws

What are the mileage laws in Oregon? I think in TN, mileage on a car more than 10 years old is not considered.

OK, so, post up the Carfax for us to have a look at? Your "Buddy" certainly can supply you with the car's VIN.

this is not true.yeah i register my cars every year but i do not give them the milage at that time.i bought my focus from the original owner at 227.000 miles.when i went to title it i could have easily said the current milage is 50,000 and they wouldn't have known, the only thing that could maybe have caught up to me is a recall to where the dealer records milage.but i'm an honest guy and the fact i was gonna drive it into the ground so i really didn't care.and here in iowa after 15 yrs they stop asking for milage.

In all fairness to clarity; some states have recorded mileage supplied through the annual safety inspection process. This will vary, depending on the state. The Carfax on my car by timeline and mileage reads like a book. It's all there in my state, because of the annual safety inspection the car has been subjected to. What is not on Carfax, shows up in the car's VMI. Information supplied to Carfax, is also by-the-shop, too. Again, it varies.

I thought it would be fun to call the guy, and tell him that I test drove the car a couple months ago when It was for sale before and clearly remember the seller and the millage, and had a carfax made out at the time and would love to come see it again. Then tell him (you wont know when its me coming, but you sure will know after I get there) and see if he pulls the ad or changes it saying not correct mileage.

In Oregon If the car is over 10 years old at time of registration they dont require millage reports but at the Emissions test, which is required every two years it is recorded.

It would also be funny for people all over America to call this guy and say, (isnt that the same car that had 200K a couple months ago?) that would super freak him out!!!

Not sure if your talking about Portland Speedo Service or not but, if they were involved I would seriously doubt they had an idea that anything kinky was going on, They are a pretty reputable business that is well connected to the Portland Police Dept. and have been around for ever. I dont think that they ask to many questions though when you bring in a part and tell them what you need. but I wouldnt hold that against them.
