Japanese Cars: I've found another reason to hate them.

NO TOW HOOKS

So as is obvious outside of many of our windows we have gotten a bit of snow in the past few weeks.

Storm #1 Acura Integra was attempting to get up an un-plowed driveway and inevitably got stuck. (Really stuck, the front wheels were unloaded) Now at this point I was blocked in at the end of the drive but I could have easily pulled him up the rest of the driveway except that this car had no tow hook/eye on the front of the car. In the end I was allowed to drive around the house on the grass and pull it out from behind (Thankfully it had a hook on the back end.)

Storm #2 Mitsubishi Eclipse- Car was parked at the end of the last storm at work and the owner couldn't rock it free. I pulled the Gwagen around like before for what should have been a quick 30 second pull. Nope, no tow hooks front OR back. Good thing it wasn't unloaded like the last one and that I brought a shovel with me.....

Presumably because after they lower them so much that they get stuck when so much as a flurry descends

Don't knock those hooks...! They are a must if you track your car.

I had a pair of them for the E55 when I took her to the track.

I had ones that looked like this:

I can say with some certainty that the majority of tow-hook-equipped civics I've seen will never get anywhere near a track. Same principle as body kits.

So presumably I should find a Honda with one of these things and give him a pull in low range to see if his hook is properly welded in place or taped on

Pretty sure the wife's Element has a front hook, or loop or something welded to the subframe. I'll have to check.

Every Japanese car I have owned has tow hooks front and back, all four corners.
They are used as tie down hooks while shipping from japan or on transports..

I first used a tow hook on a 1971 VW. When I bought the car the dealer said it would be removed during makeready, but I told him to leave it since I might need it someday. And I did.

Porsche's of that vintage have a big towing eye welded to the front pan. I don't recall how 911's then dealt with it, but 914's all have a button that pops out of the rear bumper and then you screw in an eye that comes with the tool kit.

It's just one of those things you hope you never need but are glad it is there when you do.

Looks like this one has a tiedown eye but pulling the car might rip off the bumper unless you hook it to the lower shock mount of the tow vehicle -

Lots of cars have screw-in eyes in the toolkit too, my VW is that way.

I was looking for those as well but I didn't see any.

(Car in question, perhaps the newer models have them?)
