Looking for advice on good places to live in CA

Considering remotely a permanent relocation with the GF. We are going on a fact finding mission next month to check out areas of CA, and im curious if anyone has any recommendations on cities or areas to check out or avoid.

Putting together an itinerary for our road trip.

Nothing beats Los Angeles. But it's takes years to fall in love: it's a tough Lady to crack.

We would need to know a lot more about what you are looking for-- Go Go Go metro, sleepy rural, hot -dry, cool , cold much of the time. Lots of job opportunities (not much currently), lower taxes than other areas, there's a little of everything in the big ole state.

SF is gloomy, cold and Expensive with a capital! For the rest a fun city, but I think I would prefer Austin TX.

You left out a state sales tax that is close to 10% in some counties. With the recent carbon cap and trade scheme just in effect energy prices will be going up. In the last election the the good people voted themselves a income tax increase. And Gov. Moonbeam in Sacramento and a veto proof majority for the Dems in both State the State legislature and senate we can expect more tax increases and more government intrusion into our lives. On the plus side the weather is good

Paso Robles is nice, as is the Big Bear area.

I would avoid Bakersfield or anyplace in Kern County unless you love the oil business. I retired from one of the biggest oil companies in the world and even I didn't like going to Kern County.

Ventura is OK, but is filled with Rattlesnakes.

California is so diverse you need only to decide on what type of place and area you are looking for. One of the best places in LA is the Rancho Palos Verde area, but bring along the $2 mil you will need for a starter home.

If you like golf then you might check out Palm Springs. It can be a lot cheaper to live there than you might think.

And if you want rugged then anywhere along the Russian River will do.

Yes to the small mountain towns in either place (if you can find work). Otherwise, Poenis or Loser Vegas are in no way comparable to any major coastal metro area in CA. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

Given the choice between Zonieland and CA, I'd pick Vermont.

Please be advised that in spite of common wisdom, Arizona is NOT a suburb of California.
