painting chromed plastic.

I just bought a newer vehicle and I wanted to black out the plastic grill that is chrome. Has anyone ever done it and what is the proper procedure? Can I get away with scuffing it and painting it black and then clear coat?

Depending upon the paint used, you will be better off to remove the chrome first.

I would suggest that you consult your local auto paint jobber.

Let us know how it comes out.

There is special paint that bonds to plastic, you can find it at any lowes or hd. Always worked very well for me - also that "chromed" plastic is not chrome, it's just paint. Unless of course there is metal underneath like an inlay/veneer that the chrome can bond to.

My favorite trick is to find some of the same material and do a trial run. Might be hard to get the exact item at a boneyard for a decent price unless it was badly damaged. I'd do copious sanding with 150 or 220 and then use a dark gray primer.

There's probably ample chrome flashed over onto the inside(backside) of the grill to experiment on.

i've had great success with Plasti Dip in a spray can available at the Depot.

Using it for the same application. Murderizing some plasti chrome crap.

Its good stuff! kinda like spray latex paint. its made for jobs like this

several colors are available. ive only used the black. leaves a nice flat black and durable finish.
