George washington hand written check

I was in an antique store today and saw a framed picture of George Washington with a little piece of paper at the bottom about the size of a dollar bill with hand writing on it. I looked at it closer and thought it might be a hand written check by GW. The paper was an odd color and looked a lot like cloth, the fountain pen ink was sepia colored and some what faded.

then i noticed next to it in fairly small letters the document all spelled out in modern block letters.

It appeared to be a hand written check written and signed by GW himself.

Thinking it couldn't be real I passed. I am thinking I should go back and get it.

No way could the check be real. Someone as important as the POTUS would have done electronic banking.

If its cheap it would be kinda cool but I wonder how hard it would be to verify some authenticity?

I dunno. I am going to call the store and see if they will ship it to me though. I think its real and worth a lot more than the asking price, but its a 90 mile drive one way so I'm a little reluctant to make the trip not knowing for sure.

I can call the redhead from pawn stars though.

Sorry Tom - we probably get more American TV here than you do - I wasn't sure which show you were talking about...

...so I got all wrapped up in other ideas...

Even if fake some fakes are so old now that they have real value. I will be keeping an eye open for you standing in long lines in antique appraisal shows.

You never know sometimes has been my experience. There were four framed really nice watercolors at a yard sale for like 5-10.00 for the lot in the last few years.. I was visually examining them to see if they were prints or not. When a woman reached over my shoulder and grabbed them. What had held me back was that the high quality watercolors if real should not be at the asking price.

I got a chance to examine them again after she brought them. As luck would have it they were authentic original very high quality watercolors. Value was probably at least a few hundred apiece. I actually knew that when I first laid eyes on them and just made the misteak of feeling they had to be prints at the asking price. You snooze you lose I suppose sometimes.

I am not always totally asleep though. Having pissed off some people by just approaching a vendor and paying for an item someone may be examining and I felt they were going to purchase it. Then walking up to them and stating that unfortunatly I had already purchased it.

I do have limits though at the same time. An aquaintance of mine when attending auction sales of vehicles would swap some spark plug wires on a vehicle he was seriously interested in buying as late as he could before the auction. The car would go across the block sounding bad and he usually got it for far less. Too unethical for me unfortunatly but it sure worked for him.
