The Mrs has it off. I will work today at least a while and she and I will probably do something vacationlike for a while as well.

No, we get 11 paid holidays, but MLK day is not one of them. We have a week or more of paid plant shutdown after X-mas so we don't get the "minor" holidays off like the Feds do.

MLK holiday

The cynic in me says it would be Politically Incorrect in San Francisco not to give its City workers the day off.

So I breezily enjoyed it every year until I retired.

Bounced paychecks, horrendous hours, many unpaid, from private industry made me move into City government, and even without bonuses, 401k plans, and all that other kind of stuff that is the lure of private business, the medical and dental and vision benefits are sure worth it now.

And the City will NEVER go out of business either, and so neither will my pension go down the toilet.

Nope, I'll be working all day. Which gets me out of the houseful of kids!

Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day are it for closures for us (besides Saturdays Nov-Feb).

Off "work"? I suppose you could say so. The holiday to me means:

M(asonry) There's that bit of cracked stucco by the back door needing patching and paint.

L(aundry room) Gotta put some more shelves for soap and stuff over the washer, made the mistake last week of putting some shelves into my work shop last week and wasn't quick enough to keep her from seeing them

K(itchen) Really need to repair the spot in the plaster due to my over-zealous moving of the 'fridge while cleaning the coils, the wife's making noises about cabinets again. Need to straighten the bowed shelving so all the dishes don't slide into the center of the cabinet.

So yeah, I guess I'm "off" work. Stinkin' holidays wear me out!

The employee group votes on what vacation days we take off. The day after Thanksgiving (Black Friday) always wins out to MLK. and Good Friday to Presidents Day.

On a fine note. Today Mississippi also celebrates Robert E Lee's Birthday ! Ironic eh?

No, I work today but we can take MLK as a floating holiday so I can pair it up with my two days off and get a three day weekend.

Until 2000, VA celebrated Lee, Jackson (Stonewall), King day. But changed Lee, Jackson to the Friday before King day. Obviously they saw the conflict.

When I still worked, I always had MLK day off. But my favorite holiday was always Columbus day. Only federal workers had it off. Everyone else had to work while I played.

Tell me about it.

Just had to order a new updated defrost control board and air handler control board for the heat pump - $160 online - A/C service techs that came down to troubleshoot the beast on Saturday wanted $300 EACH for them - plus gave me the used car salesman routine (no offense to Tyler) about how I needed to spend 5 grand and put in a whole new system from their company - that has a SEER rating two notches lower than our present system - to "save money".

Not to mention I had to take my laptop, with the Amana technical pdf on it, outside so they could figure out how to troubleshoot it - and when I opened up the control panel to verify the board numbers yesterday, found out they'd left 2 of the wiring connections to the present defrost board unhooked, whether by mistake (it was getting dark and it is crowded with wiring in there) or on purpose to convince me to buy a new system.

Needless to say, won't be calling those gents again.

Nope, have to work. I also work Xmas and Thanksgiving. Not a big deal to me, I'd rather make the money.
