I did not follow Tony the Tiger but Thurl Arthur Ravenscroft who was the voice of Tony was also a narrator at the Pageant of the Masters in Laguna Beach. I loved his voice. Reminds me of James Earl Jones and Dennis Haysbert (the Allstate guy)

I remember watching Gary Moore. I always thought he had the easiest job in the world and I never could figure out what his talent was besides being a mid-week Ed Sullivan. (You will have to look at the wiki page to understand this comment.)
I also remember Newt the Gnu (Voice: "Hey, Newt. What's new?" Newt: "I don't know, what's Gnu with you?") Hey.... I'm old. |

I think it's that guy that spits on the windshield and cleans it.

My first job was as a commissioned "island attendant". Full service was the name of the game. Every gas customer became a selling opportunity. Every service we offered helped the customer, but gave me a opportunity to see, observe, and sell. ( Some raised this service to the illegal level by creating "opportunities" by cutting tires, or killing batteries with alka seltzer, squirting oil on shocks etc.) Practiced correctly full service was a symbiotic relationship that benefited both parties.
I have always felt it was very short-sighted of the gas stations to reduce from full- to self- service. Of course, I never met another commissioned island attendant, (other than my co-workers), either.

Ravenscroft also sang the "Grinch" song in the original version.

Gas station attendants were killed off by a market shift to ten-minute oil change shops.
When the price of gas started rising stations started to offer self-serve. This was the first nail in the coffin of station attendants. The void left in the market was filled by ten-minute oil change shops. People found that their cars worked fine with this routine and they were also in and out of what was rapidly turning back into a 'Filling Station' from the 1920's. Today it is rare to see anyplace offering fuel for sale that is not a convenience store. I never got into the marketing side of the oil business that much, but I have been told by those that are that ALL the profit is made in the store. I do know for a fact that some stores will sell gasoline below their costs to increase store traffic. Not by much of course, but by enough to get you into the door. |
