I thought they stopped drilling a few dozen meters from the surface to avoid contamination of the lake with the kerosene....guess not

They did stop, then resumed drilling using some sort of "clean" drilling fluid.
Edit: Article says the sample had kerosene contamination. I guess they started putting the "clean" stuff in but never got all the dirty stuff out.
