Looking at buying a home office printer. Looking for recommendations.
I need an all in one printer for my home office. I want to be able to wirelessly tie into my modem, hopefully to be able to use the phone line wirelessly for faxing as well (my office has no hard phone line but modem is connected to it). I want remote printing (wirelessly).
I mainly will use it to print remotely from different devices, scan documents (I want EASY scanning), fax to email, receive faxes, not CRAZY expensive replacement ink cartridges. Budget, I suppose the cheaper the better but willing to spend up to a few hundred dollars.

My solution is as follows:
* Canon MX-series (882 I think, I'm not there now) for color printing, fax, and scanning - about $150-200 * oldschool HP LaserJet 2200dn (with JetDirect) bought off of Craigslist for $40 for B&W fast printing. The cartridges last years, never dry out since they used powdered toner, and cost $25 for bootlegs. The printer itself is indestructible and supports duplex printing as well. It's also nice for another reason -- because it's so old, almost any computer people bring in will have the driver built-in. |

Before you buy a printer check out how much the replacement ink cartridges are. That's where they make there money.

I have the Cannon MX340. It won't connect to the phone wirelessly, but will connect to the wireless network with ease. Cartridges aren't bad, $50 for a black and color combo pack, high capacity from Staples.
I've printed some impressive photos from this unit, as well as decent speed on black documents. I think I paid $150 two years ago. I think it's your best bang for the buck.

Thanks guys. Maybe I should take a step back and ask what are the options out there for wireless printing? I've never owned one before. Always just hooked my computer up via USB.
I assume any "wireless" printer means it will connect to a paired device such as my computer or tablet for printing. Does this also mean it will connect to my modem wirelessly? How about connecting to a fax line? Can it wirelessly connect to the modem which is in turn hardwired to the phone line?

WiFi connections for printing typically means you don't need a USB or ethernet cable, but not the RJ-11 for the phone line to fax. You still need the wire to the phone outlet. BTW, not all phones or tablet connect automatically to all Wi-Fi printers natively. Be sure your device is supported or has a software app to link it.
I would recommend stepping away from ink cartridge addiction. Laser is faster, has a lower cost per page, doesn't give you moist printouts . . . |

As was as faxing, the printer has its own modem built in -- you just plug a phone extension into the back. |

As far as I know, they don't make a wireless phone connection fax/printer for the common person in a price range that is affordable. The printer would need it's own cellular device to operate in, I would think...

I'm not sure what the model is, but Brother makes good all-in-ones and the catridges are dirt cheap. We have a wired model that's 5 years old and doing fine. The carts are $1/color at Meritline. The more current wireless model is the same story.

If you don't have a land line, a better solution would be a virtual fax service, where you e-mail images to a server and they get faxed for you. Faxes back to you get e-mailed back to your account. http://greenfax.com/ and http://www.myfax.com/ are some examples. |

I'll second the Canon MX series. I've owned one for over a year and it's rock-solid.
One thing to also consider is the ability to print straight from your wireless phone (ie iphone). The newer printers should have this option as well.

I've got a Canon MX350....meh.. just another inkjet with stupid expensive ink, if you ask me.
Do you send/receive a lot of faxes? (who even uses fax anymore...) This may be an option... google fax I haven't really looked into it, as I really only ever need to send faxes when buying property, and it will be a while before I buy another one.

I've got a Samsung CLP-620ND. Its a network color laser jet. I picked it up on used on eBay for $250. It only had <500 pages printed on it. Came with full starter cartridges (2,500 pages). Replacement carts are just as expensive as the printer but you're supposed to get 5,000 pages from them.
I don't have any inkjets any more. Just the Samsung and an old HP Laserjet 6P

I've got a couple of the Canon MX printers, 860 and 892, IIRC. I found some great after market cartridges on eBay....maybe a buck a piece. You're not going to get any cheaper than that.
