Hello all, newbie here!
Should first start off by telling you I live in Phoenix.. I am looking to change my oil for the first time! ....but unknown to me was the previous oil weight and type in the car previously. I was looking for a good recommendation on the brand and weight to use in my '81 Mercedes 300D? I've heard everything from 15w40C rotella to 20w50. Anyone care to help in sharing opinions would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks ya'll. ** specifically should I use synthetic or not? |

I've never seen a 20w50 that is diesel rated. I like the 15w40 rotella but any good diesel rated oil is good, but I'd stick with the mfgr recommendation on weight.

Concerning Syn oil....
It is great stuff for a lower mileage car, but as the miles increase the seals start to wear. 'High Mileage' oils take this into consideration and the molecules are bigger so they will not slip by the seals. Syn oils ALL have very small Molecules and this is one reason they lube your engine better. But these will slip pass worn seals to the point you will wonder why your crank seal has suddenly started leaking. If you can afford to roll the dice on a crankcase full of Syn oil then go for it. If you suddenly develop oil leaks from every seal then you will just have to go back to Dino oil. We used to test Syn oil to 250,000 miles and then tear down the engine. There was usually no wear, so the stuff is worth using if you can use it without losing it all past some worn seals. |

You may want to post this in Diesel Discussion also, or see my recent thread asking the same question.
