Carpet
The carpet in our house is 24 years old. I wonder if it's time to replace it. :D how long should carpet last?

These guys, who want to sell you some carpets, say 3-5 years:

When I bought my first house it had carpet installed
First thing I did was start ripping out the carpet in master bedroom. Literally I had opened the door around 2 PM and had the mouldings out and picking out staples around 6 - 7 PM :) Then took a week off work and sanded the floors and stained and all that. Came out pretty decent and my expenditure was something, I think about $120. For a while the old bedroom carpet I had thrown on the driveway and was parking my car on it. I kind of liked it (like a showroom!) but after a few rains I rolled it and threw it away. |

My father and I replaced his carpet with hardwood, some nice (and cheap) Indonesian wood
Compared to replacing carpet with new carpet, it is more work, mostly in the cutting the planks for the corners and edges. It seems a lot easier with wider planks (they are like 3 inch wide instead of like 1.5 inch) than the old-fashioned strips I have in my house. I think the two of us did the dining room, living room in hallway in a weekend or so. |

CLK... 24 year old carpet?? have you tried munching it?? |
I have a Persian rug that's about 120 years old.

If....you have concrete under the carpet, etching and staining might be a possibility. I've seen it done....not too bad; although, virgin concrete turns out much better.
I have hardwood work in my future. |

In my opinion, carpet is pretty disgusting stuff. It's hard to get it clean and pulling up 20 yr old carpet reveals the grossest array of stains and smells. I take up carpet at every opportunity and replace it with hardwood if possible. Laminate is my second choice.

I rent, so I don't get as much choice in the matter. When I finally do get around to buying, carpet is going to get replaced with something other than carpet as it wears out.

Carpet over time has really fallen out of favour for many reasons. Carpet stores now have very little carpet but everything else it seems now.
I want to try some bamboo flooring or anything else that is that hard if there is on the next floors I do. I am interested on how our pneumatic nailer will handle it. Bamboo is that hard they tell me. |
I noticed they had bamboo laminate in Costco the last time I was there.
