Can some firearms sound fully automatic?

Sunday We were at a trail-head here in Missouri; there is a public firing range with the normal firing, and rapid firing as people play with their toys.
While we were getting ready to head out we hear fully automatic gunfire; bursts of like seven rounds, then four, then seven, then five.....
We had never heard fully automatic at an unmonitored firing range before; is this normal? Or legal? Is there a gun set up that can sound fully automatic but it's not? (We are not firearm fanatics ,so be nice)....

Look up Bump Fire. Completely legal in MOST states. Fire rates that are near fully automatic rates.

Occasionally some people might be able to pull the trigger fast enough on some guns that it might sound like full auto. Then there is the previously mentioned "bump fire", legal but extremely stupid in my opinion. There is at least one manufacturer who sells a stock that enables an AR 15 to be "bump fired" in a controlled fashion which is probably about as safe as an actual full auto one.

Fully automatic weapons

are NOT illegal. You simply need a special (and expensive) license to trade in or own them. It is probable that you actually heard one firing, especially at a sanctioned range.

At the range here there's a sign that says you need to have your Class III paperwork on you if you bring your machine gun out.

Fully automatic weapons are not against the law. It's amazing to me that people think they are. Ownership is cost prohibitive, you need a tax stamp that is a pain to get and must be carried at all times when in possession of the weapon, and the weapons themselves are silly expensive; north of 12K to get in the game. You might have heard someone playing with their automatic toy, but you more than likely heard bump fire.

I used to own an Italian made Beretta 9mm. You could squeeze off 5 and it would sound like 3.

Ask John Hinckley. He was able to plug 6 shots in 1.7 seconds with a silly handgun.

How would gun control slow down a trigger-happy loco like Hinckley?

Bump fire or they have the slide fire stock.

The only way to really tell if its full auto, well you have to know your guns and its got to be an oddball rare piece like an MG42 or some European sub gun. I can hear the difference on some, and a lot of guys who shoot a lot can.

You can't tell with AR's or AK's and just about any battle rifle.

The slidefire is fun and legal. First time I shot one after I got the hang of it I was having so much fun I just dumped a 30rd Pmag down range.
